Deakin University - Key Needs Study (May 2002)
The Deakin University study investigated the
needs, both current and future, of the heritage
collections held by museums, galleries, archives,
museums libraries and in Australia. A number of
key needs emerged from this study Uniform
system of cataloguing to maximise access to
heritage collections and to allow for greater
sector wide integration of documentation systems.
Digitisation of collections - The creation of
digital image libraries to link to the WWW to
provide remote access to our heritage
collections. A high and progressively increasing
and sophisticated level of usage of the Internet
and email by staff in heritage collecting
institutions was identified. Particularly for
cultural tourism promotion. Not surprisingly
Small Museums Collecting institutions (SMCs) were
singled out in the study, as those at greatest
risk of missing out on the benefits of collection
digitisation, electronic promotion and
documentation standardisation.
