Learning outcomes
  • Able to use a variety of written language when
    writing to persuade people.

3
Overview
  • It was World Leprosy Day on Sunday the 25
January. This year The Leprosy Mission is
focusing on a project in Chanchaga, a rural
    village in Nigeria.
  • Today we are going to help the people in
Chanchaga create write a persuasive letter to the
Nigerian government asking for money to help
build houses, schools and safe drinking water.

4
  • Have you ever tried to persuade someone to do
something before? Maybe you have tried to
persuade your parents to buy you some sweets!

5
  • Turn to a partner and share how you tried to
persuade the person to do what you wanted.
  • Share a couple of stories with the whole class.
  • Did they succeed? Why?

6
  • Now lets look at persuasive writing.
  • Persuasive writing puts forward a point of view
and attempts to get the reader to agree with it.
  • For example
  • I am the best football player in the class.
This is true because I scored the most goals last
    week!

Here is the point of view.
Here they start to try and persuade you to agree
with the statement.
7
Language
  • written in the present tense
  • includes emotive language
  • includes rhetorical questions
  • makes your opinion sound like it is a fact
  • uses powerful adjectives and verbs
  • uses statistics and facts that help your argument
  • use logical cause and effect connectives

8
How should it be structured?
  • Start the argument with your statement / point of
view. Remember it needs to immediately catch the
    readers interest / attention.
  • Explain your position on the issue being covered.
  • The heart of the letter includes arguments that
    support your initial statement.
  • End with a summary.

9
Identify elements
  • You should raise my pocket money. Everyone else
in my class is given far more pocket money than
me. John Smith receives a whole 3 more than me
which is dreadfully unfair. If you gave me 3
more I could save up for a new Play Station 3
game for Christmas. It is also important to
highlight that you have not raised my pocket
money allowance for three years! Jo, who is in
the top set for Maths, said that because you have
not raised it inflation means I cannot buy as
much. I am not quite sure what inflation is, but
it does not sound good. I am willing to do more
chores around the house, if I really have to.
Also, if you really love me, you would seriously
think about giving me more money. Finally you
have to ask yourself, is my allowance really
    fair?

Activity one
  • Khana is a very dry village and has suffered
from a recent drought. The nearest well is 5
miles away. The community has 150 adults and
children and is very poor with 70 of the people
in Khana not owning land. Most people earn a
living by being a labourer for the people who do
own land. Some people own cattle and goats but
are losing many of them as they cannot afford the
veterinary fees. 90 of the houses are in very
poor condition and in desperate need of repair.

11
Lagos, the nearest large city, is 50 miles away
and too far to walk to. It is important because
that is where they could sell their food and
various clothes they make. The roads are also
very poor. The nearest school is 5 miles away and
most parents cant afford to send their children
there due to the cost of school uniforms and
books. The government can only afford two
teachers at the school which means there are over
100 children in each class.
12
Ten people have leprosy and they have to live in
rundown houses on the edge of the village. The
village has a local clinic, but the government
cannot afford to provide a doctor. There is a
nurse, but she charges extra money to supplement
her salary. The village has one shop, but it does
not stock many products due to the problems of
transporting them from Lagos. Finally Khana only
has two toilets which results in diseases
breaking out. The people of Khana decide that
the problems are becoming too much and something
needs to be done. They decide they want to write
a letter to the government to ask for their help.
However, they dont know how to write it. Can you
help them?

Activity two
  • Ask the children to swap the letters with a
partner. Using the colours, highlight the
    following sections.
  • Present tense (green)
  • Emotive language (red)
  • Rhetorical questions (blue)
  • Fact (pink)

Debate
  • A village meeting has been arranged with
government officials. This is the chance for the
villagers to explain why they need the money. The
government officials do not have much money to
give so they are not going to just hand it over.
You are going to have to persuade them.
  • Choose a group to work together to represent the
Nigerian government. Explain that they are going
to have to argue why they cannot give any money.
    Some ideas could be
  • We dont have enough money because we are a poor
    country.
  • There are other villages that need the money
    more.
  • How do we know you are going to spend the money
    on what you say?
  • Government officials sit at the front of the
class and look very official. The rest of the
children are the villages and you have to
persuade these officials to give them the money.
  • Ask one child to sit on the side and decide
which group wins the debate and to pick out
particular persuasive words they use to help win
    the debate.
