Evacuation

• Expectation of immediate bombing from the
  Luftwaffe
• September 1939, 1.5 million children evacuated
• Teachers, pregnant women and the disabled also
  evacuated
• Many returned home during the phoney war and
  had to re-evacuated in the summer of 1940
• Not just from London Eg Liverpool, Glasgow
• Some children were sent abroad Eg Canada,
  Australia

  duty or for the allowance paid or for the work
  they could do
• Misunderstandings between different social
  classes occurred - all children from the East
  End were dirty
• Many enjoyed the freedom of living in the
  countryside

• Ultimately the scheme saved the lives of
  thousands of children who would have died in the
  Blitz if they had stayed at home
