Hazlet Township 2009-2010 Budget
The Students Perspective
By Natalie James Alexandria Sousa
2
Hazlet Township Overview
  • Our public schools have been capable of
representing the lowest accumulated budget of any
    district in the county.
  • The district has decreased the budget at a much
greater interval than any other district in the
    county.
  • Despite this decrease in budget, our district has
continued to excel above the state average.

The Current National Presentiment
  • Approximately 40-44 million adults in the United
    States are functionally illiterate.
  • The average reading skills of adults are measured
by the current comprehension levels of an 8th or
    9th grader.
  • Intermediate literacy levels are occupying the
largest margin, at a startling 53 of United
    States citizens.
  • 21 of average citizens are incapable of reading
a newspaper with currently literary capabilities.
  • 48 cant read a bar graph.
  • Through implementing the budget, Hazlet Township
schools can work toward fighting against these
    foreboding statistics.

Analyzing Benefits Acquired From Passing the
Budget
  • The availability of a writers workshop would
allow for correction in literary statistics
    discussed previously.
  • The implementation of a general education
preschool would vastly prepare children for their
    Kindergarten experience.
  • Passing the budget will permit teachers to truly
teach past the conventional means, and will allow
students to learn on several levels, rather than
    in one way.
  • It will provide for educational stimulants,
which will motivate children to perform much
better and complete tasks readily without
    additional coaxing.

Analyzing Benefits Acquired From Passing the
Budget - Continued
  • Allows for Advanced Placement testing to continue
to be provided without payment on behalf of the
    student.
  • Allows for wireless computers, which will
allocate a limitless supply of information in a
    much more efficient method.
  • The computer lab. is only capable of holding a
set amount of students at one time, since library
space is now used for classrooms.
  • The implementation and renovation of science labs
at the elementary school level will greatly
    benefit the students.
  • Science provides a hands-on experience for
children in preparation for lab. work in middle
    and high school.

Analyzing Benefits Acquired From Passing the
Budget - Continued
  • The accessibility to newer textbooks, especially
in subjects such as Social Studies, allows for
    updated information.
  • Information is frequently outdated.
  • Field trips offer the opportunity to witness the
purpose of live education and allow students to
see the results of hard work, as opposed to
simply being told the expected results.
  • As previous students of Sycamore Drive School,
both of us are advocates of the idea of a
    renovation.
  • The convenience of non-sports-oriented clubs are
beneficial to those whom are not interested in
physical activity and are much more involved with
    the academic aspect of extracurricular
    activities.
  • Busing could be extended to students who live
closer than a mile to the school and have working
    parents.
