Challenges
  • The use of IP tools is important to make
informed decisions, manage and regulate access to
and use of the cultural heritage of the
    indigenous and local communities
  • Challenges
  • Need to raise awareness among community members
on the functioning of the IP system
  • Need to develop and put into practice communal IP
policies and protocols when documenting our TK
    and TCEs
  • Need to further develop linkages between the
    community, national cultural institutions and
    national IP offices
  • The community has taken a step of developing a
trade mark which will help in identifying
authentic maasai work especially beadwork and
needs assistance on the legal issues involved.
  • There is also the need to document traditional
work as now everyone is moving towards imroved
designs that are more apealing to the global
    market.

9
Challenges
  • Traditional knowledge and traditional cultural
expressions are important for the economic and
sustainable development of indigenous and local
    communities
  • Challenges
  • Need for funding and partnerships
  • To meet the objectives we have established as a
    community and
  • To meet the interest of many other communities
around the world to participate in the WIPO
    training program
