detailed tabulations - GMTU Reports 994 994P are part of a series of
reports presenting the data from the 2002 GMATS
surveys
3GMATS Surveys 2002 Bury Key Centre
- Travellers leaving Bury Key Centre by car bus
were asked about their journeys as they crossed a
cordon around the centre - Passengers boarding at Bury Metrolink station
were also interviewed - This presentation gives an overview of the
findings from those surveys - It considers first people who had visited the
Centre, then those travelling through

5Bury Key Centre Definition
- Note that the GMATS survey points lie outside the
ring road. The reason for this was to maximise
the usefulness of the data, particularly in
developing traffic models
6Visitors to the Key Centre How may visited the
key centre and how did they travel?
- Nearly 44,000 were in the Key Centre between
0700 1900 - 75 used car
- 23 used bus
- only 2 used Metrolink

there?
- 40 were shopping
- 27 were at work

- Car dominated most activities
- 82 work
- 68 shopping
- 82 leisure
9Visitors to the Key Centre Where did they go
after their visit?
- 65 of car, 78 of bus 56 of Metrolink trips
ended within Bury borough - Only 8 of car trips and 2 of bus trips ended
outside Greater Manchester - 24 of Metrolink trips ended in Manchester and
10 in Trafford
10Visitors to the Key Centre How did their
destination vary with their activity?
- For all activities 67 ended their trip in the
borough - Leisure visitors (83) were most likely and those
at work (56) least likely - 70 of shoppers end their trip within the borough
- 32 of those at work and 26 of shoppers ended
their trip in the rest of Greater Manchester

travel? Car and bus users only
- The average distance travelled from the centre
is 6km - Trips by car averaged 6km, bus 5km and Metrolink
10km - On average workers travelled 8km by car, 9km by
Metrolink and 5km by bus

Metrolink users get to their key centre bus stop?
- 92 walked to their bus stop and 95 to the
Metrolink station - 7 of bus users interchanged from another bus
- 3 arrived by car and parked

occupancy of visitors cars?
- On average each car carried 1.48 people
- Occupancy varied widely with activity in the
Centre - Work 1.23
- Shopping 1.67
- Social/leisure 1.57
- 83 of drivers leaving work travelled alone

- For most activities in the centre more people
parked off-street than on-street - Only 18 parked on-street
- 89 of shoppers and 84 of workers parked
off-street

drivers paid to park?
- 35 of those parking off-street and 29 who
parked on-street paid to park - Only 26 of workers paid to park compared to 45
of shoppers

are they going?
- 88 of commercial vehicles leaving the Key Centre
were Light Goods vehicles (LGVs) - 42 of Goods Vehicles had journeys which finished
within Bury - 20 travelled outside
- Only 3 of commercial vehicles leaving the Key
Centre were HGVs

- 49 of all commercial vehicles were collecting or
delivering goods in the Key Centre
18Commercial Vehicles How far did they travel?
- The average distance for all goods vehicles was
13km - LGVs travelled 13km on average and MGVs 11km
- LGVs travelled furthest (18km) when undertaking
personal business

their destination?
- 74 of all trips leaving the Key Centre were
going home - The next main activities were business visits
(6.2) and going shopping (5.7)

- 67 of trips finished in Bury. This did not
change a lot for different destination activities - 24 of people going home finished in the rest of
Greater Manchester and 7 outside

- 86 of all trips crossing the cordon were made by
car, 12 by bus and 3 by Metrolink - 63 of car and 67 of bus trips finished within
Bury - 51 of Metrolink trips finished in Manchester

was their purpose?
- 33 of all trips were either Home to Work or
Work to Home trips - Home to Shopping and Shopping to Home
accounted for another 13 of trips - 23 of Employers Business to Home and Home to
Employers Business ended outside Greater
Manchester

far were they travelling?
- The average distance travelled for cars was 11km,
for buses 8km and for Metrolink 15km - The longest distances for all modes were Home to
employers business (30km) and Employers
business to home (26km) - Home to work trips were 12km by car, 10km by
bus and 15km by Metrolink. The return directions
were all slightly shorter

- 93 of people walked from the alighting bus stop
- 6 caught another bus

was their average occupancy?
- On average there were 11 people per bus crossing
the cordon between 0700 and 1900 - This varied during the day with an average
occupancy of 7 during the morning peak (0700 to
0930), 10 during the inter-peak (0930 to 1530)
and 18 in the evening peak (1530 to 1830)

- 79 walked from their alighting station
- 11 caught a bus
- Other modes were train (3), Car (driver) (2),

- On average each car had 1.42 occupants
- Occupancy was lowest in the morning peak with an
average occupancy of only 1.30 - 78 of cars had no passengers in the morning peak

- 49 of all goods vehicle journeys through the
cordon finish in Bury - For both LGVs and MGVs just over 50 finish their
journey in Bury - 38 of lorries with 4 or more axles finish their
journeys outside Greater Manchester

- 34 of all goods vehicles crossing the cordon
were being used to move goods - In the case of lorries with 4 or more axles this
rises to 86 - 41 of LGVs were being used for business use and
