2Association of Academic Staff The Association
is active in negotiating and administering the
contract agreements, monitoring and influencing
internal university governance and participating
in activities at both the federal and provincial
level which affect universities.
3Association of Academic Staff Since formal
establishment in 1950, the Association has
developed a positive relationship with the
Governors and the administrators of the
university, a relationship dedicated to resolving
problems, not battling issues. We share a common
goal to develop this University into a
preeminent research university, one in which
Albertans may find a sense of both benefit and
pride.

- Largest and most diverse (complex) association in
Canada - More than 4000 members (designated by Board of
Governors). Chartered as a Corporation by the
Universities Act and continued under the
Post-secondary Learning Act. - Academic Faculty

- TRAS Trust Research Academic Staff
- SOT Sessional and Other Temporary Staff
5- The purposes of the Association, as set out in
its bylaws, are to - Advance and protect the individual and
collective interests of its members. - Protect independence of thought and freedom of
teaching and research. - Provide an environment appropriate to the
University and the enhancement of the quality of
university education in Alberta. - Act as the sole negotiating agent for members in
establishing a collective agreement governing the
terms and conditions of appointment. - Act as the representative of members when there
is a dispute between the member and the
University with respect to the collective
agreement.

10Grievances These are the mechanism for
resolving differences between Association members
and University administration that cannot be
resolved through informal means. Such grievances
often involve legal representation by the
Association staff or by appointed legal
representatives. If a resolution is not reached,
then these grievances may proceed to a final (and
binding) arbitration.
