Title: Teen Pregnancy

Teen Pregnancy
2
Teen Pregnancy Statistics
  • The United States has the highest rates of teen
pregnancy and births in the industrialized world.
  • US rates are twice as high as in England and
Wales or Canada, and eight times as high as in
    the Netherlands or Japan.
  • In the United States, one of every ten births
    involves a teen mother.
  • Teen mothers account for 11 of all births in the
    US.
  • Three-quarters of a million teens between 15 and
    19 become pregnant each year.
  • Teen pregnancy costs the United States over 7
    billion annually.
  • Nearly 80 of the fathers of babies born to teen
mothers do not marry their babies' mothers.
  • On average, these absent fathers pay less than
    800 annually for child support.

3
Teen Pregnancy Statistics
  • Out of all teen pregnancies, 82 are unintended.
  • Teen pregnancy accounts for 20 of all unplanned
    pregnancies annually.
  • Two-thirds of teen pregnancies occur among teens
    18-19 years old.
  • Out of all teen pregnancies, 57 end in birth.
  • Another 14 end in miscarriage.
  • Out of all teenage pregnancies, 29 are
    terminated by abortion.

4
Teen Pregnancy Statistics
  • For young women age 15-19, black teens are most
likely to become pregnant (134 per 1,000 women).
Slightly lower rates occur among Hispanics (131
    per 1,000) followed by non-Hispanic whites (48
    per 1,000).
  • Teens who become pregnant are less likely to
    attend college.
  • Although teenage mothers today are more likely to
finish high school or earn their GEDs than in the
past, pregnant teens are less likely to attend
college than teens who do not become pregnant.

5
Teen Pregnancy Statistics
  • Teen pregnancy rates declined between 1991 and
2005 but are on the rise again.
  • The teen pregnancy rate reached an all-time high
in 1990 with an estimated 116.9 per thousand and
an all-time high birth rate of 61.8 births per
    thousand in 1991.
  • By 2002, the pregnancy rate had dropped to 75.4
    per thousand - a decline of 36.
  • However, a December 2007 report by the Centers
for Disease Control shows a 3 increase in
teenage pregnancy from 2005 to 2006.

6
Teen Pregnancy Statistics
  • Less than 1/3 of teens who become pregnant before
age 18 complete high school leaving them
unprepared for the job market and more likely to
    raise their children in poverty.
  • Babies born to teens are at an increased risk of
low birth weight and the attending health
    problems mental retardation, blindness,
deafness, mental illness, cerebral palsy and
    infant death.
  • Girls born to teen mothers are 22 more likely to
    become mothers as teens themselves.
  • Sons of teen mothers are more likely to end up in
    jail.

7
Teen Pregnancy Statistics
  • Daughters of teenager mothers are more likely to
become teenage mothers themselves, and are higher
at risk of long-term welfare dependency
  • Children who grow up in single-parent homes are
less likely to marry, more likely to divorce, and
more likely to have children outside of wedlock.
  • The daughters of unmarried mothers are more
likely to become sexually active in their teen
years and are more likely to become involved with
    men that will abuse them.

8
Teen Pregnancy Statistics
  • Children of divorce are 60 percent more likely to
undergo divorce or separation in adulthood than a
    similar population from intact families.
  • The divorce/separation rate for white male
children of divorce was 35 percent higher than
for white male children from intact families.
  • Teens from single-parent homes are twice as
likely to drop out of high school, become teen
parents, and one-and-one-half times more likely
to stay at home as young adults.

9
Teen Pregnancy Statistics
  • "14 of white women who married in the 1940s
    eventually divorced.
  • A generation later, almost 50 percent of those
that married in the late sixties and early
    seventies have already divorced.
  • Between 1970 and 1992, the proportion of babies
born outside of marriage leaped from 11 to 30.
  • By 1994, 40 of never-married women in their
thirties had had an illegitimate child.

10
Responsibilities
  • Whether planned or unplanned, a pregnant mother
has a remarkable number of responsibilities.
  • Of course, after giving birth these
responsibilities continue for the rest of your
    life!

11
Myths and Facts
  • Myth I can't get pregnant if I have my period.
Fact You can get pregnant if you have vaginal
sex while you have your period.
  • Sperm can survive inside of you anywhere from a
day to almost a week, which means that the sperm
could still be waiting for an egg to fertilize
    when you ovulate.
  • If you decide to have sex while you have your
period, you should still use birth control since
you can still get an STI.
  • If you think you may be pregnant, take a
    pregnancy test right away.
  • Todays tests give you results as quickly as six
    to eight days after conception.

12
Myths and Facts
  • Myth I can't get pregnant if he doesn't
ejaculate inside of me. Fact You can get
pregnant if your partner ejaculates inside your
vagina or on or near your vulva (this is your
external genitals including the opening to your
    vagina).
  • There is also something called pre-ejaculate
which is a small amount of fluid that contains
    thousands of sperm.
  • It is called pre-ejaculate because your partner
releases it before he actually ejaculates.
Because of pre-ejaculate, the withdrawal method
is not a reliable birth control method.

13
Myths and Facts
  • Myth I can't get pregnant if he doesn't put his
penis inside of me.Fact Pregnancy can occur
when your partner ejaculates or pre-ejaculates
near or on your vulva. Even if you and your
partner do not engage in vaginal sex, there is
still a chance of getting pregnant if there is
naked body contact between the sex organs.

14
Myths and Facts
  • Myth I can't get pregnant the first time I have
sex. Fact You can get pregnant any and every
time you have sex, it doesn't matter if it is
    your first time or not.
  • Plus, females are the most fertile when they are
teenagers and in their early 20's.

15
Myths and Facts
  • Myth If I washout my vagina after sex, I won't
get pregnant.Fact Whether you wash with hot
water, soap, or use a douche, it won't make a
    difference.
  • Sperm are really fast swimmers and will get to
their destination before you even have the chance
    to think about it.
  • Additionally, using something like a douche may
actually help them along by giving them an extra
    thrust into your cervix.
  • Also, your body works naturally to suck the
sperm up into the womb, so washing after sex
won't help you prevent a pregnancy.

16
Myths and Facts
  • Fact Your hymen has nothing to do with your
    ability to get pregnant.
  • As well, many girls' hymens don't break when they
have sex for the first time (you might have also
heard of this as "popping the cherry").
  • The hymen is a thin piece of skin that stretches
across the opening of your vagina.
  • There are different hymen sizes and openings
while some girls may not even seem to have a
    hymen.
  • Plus, your hymen can break from doing things like
horseback riding or even riding your bike.
  • If you have had sex, you can get pregnant, no
matter what state your hymen is in.
