Digitisation

• Digitisation of the map would open up a whole
  range of possibilities that could not be achieved
  with the original sheets or existing
  reproductions.
• Digital images could be
• used for research purposes in place of the
  original sheets
• published online so that many users can
  experience instant simultaneous access, rather
  than being limited to viewing the plans in person
• geo-referenced so they could be compared with GIS
  images from the current day.

The Digitisation Process

• The map sheets were photographed using a Micro
  Technical 5x4 film plate camera, to produce the
  transparencies.
• These were then drum-scanned using an Imacon
  Flextight 848 virtual drum scanner to create
  high-quality digital representations of the
  sheets.
• Further derivatives were then taken from these
  master images to create several different sets of
  images that can be used for different purposes.

Online Database

• Inmagics DB/TextWorks application is the
  underlying software for the database.
• The database has been published online using
  WebPublisherPro, an add-on component to
  DB/TextWorks.
• To access the database, go to the Auckland City
  Council archives web pages at
• http//www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/archives
• From here, click on the 1908 City of Auckland
  Map tab.
• On this page, you can read further information
  about the map and click the Search the map by
  street, building or place hyperlink to open the
  database.
