Title: Excerpt from eSP Webinar on: What do we do with the Data tab in the eSP tool

1
Excerpt from eSP Webinar onWhat do we do with
the Data tabin the eSP tool?
  • Webinar
  • Monday, December 10, 2007
  • 930-1030 AM

2
Data Tab
  • The purpose is to produce a district profile,
using existing data from PDE and data uploaded
    locally.
  • The tool provides a way to create an electronic
Gallery Walk of data summaries, which can be
used to create reflections for this profile.

3
Components of the Data Tab
4
Local Data
  • Use the Collect section to upload data sets
that are not available from PDE.
  • For example, information on programs, community
    demographics, benchmark assessment summaries,
    local assessment summaries, previous district
report cards, charts, maps, photos, descriptions
    of facilities
  • These data can then be used to create
    reflections.

What is PVAAS?
  • PVAAS is
  • A statistical analysis of existing assessment
    data.
  • A realistic measurement of a schools
    progress/growth over time.
  • Progress data to add to achievement data.
  • NOT another test.
  • NOT a measure for teacher accountability.

7
PVAAS Provides Two Key Pieces of Information for
Strategic Planning
  • Growth reports on cohorts of students
  • Performance Diagnostic Reports provide
information on the growth of students
    disaggregated by students predicted performance
levels. This can be done for an entire grade
level or for subgroups of students such as
    Special Education and Economically Disadvantaged.
  • Projection reports on groups of students
  • Student Projection Reports provide information on
the likelihood of a student achieving a specified
performance level (i.e., basic, proficient, or
    advanced) on a future PSSA.
  • A Projection Summary Tool can be used to then
summarize the projections for groups of students.

Suggested PVAAS Reports for Strategic Planning
  • PVAAS website https//pvaas.sas.com
  • Performance Diagnostic Reports
  • All students at each grade level 4 through 8
  • NCLB subgroups of students at each grade level 4
    through 8
  • Summary of Student Projections
  • Grade Last Tested to Projected Grade
  • 3 to 5
  • 4 to 6
  • 5 to 7
  • 6 to 8
  • 7 to 8
  • 8 to 11

9
Pulling Together Your PVAAS Data
  • Performance Diagnostic Reports
  • From the PVAAS website, click on Reports tab and
    select Perf Diagnostic Report.
  • Select district and schools.
  • Using Grade and Subject tabs, navigate to each
    Performance Diagnostic Report of interest.
  • Copy and paste each report into PVAAS eSP
    Performance Diagnostic Report Template.
  • Using Legend, color code each group of students
    to represent their growth.
  • GreenMore than one years growth
  • YellowOne years growth
  • RedLess than one years growth

10
PVAAS Performance Diagnostic Report
Use this option to select NCLB subgroups of
interest.
Use these tabs to navigate to different grade
levels and subject areas.
11
PVAAS eSP Performance Diagnostic Report Template
(Example)
Color code groups of students using legend
according to their growth.
Copy and paste each report here.
12
PVAAS eSP Performance Diagnostic Report Template
(Example)
  • The last page of the PVAAS eSP Performance
Diagnostic Report Template allows you to color
code the growth of your students at each grade
level and subject area into one chart.
  • This summary allows you to look for patterns
and trends of growth across subjects and/or
    grades.

13
Pulling Together Your PVAAS Data
  • Summary of Student Projections
  • From PVAAS website, click on Reports tab and
    select Student Search.
  • Use the search feature to retrieve probabilities
of proficiency for students at each grade level.
  • Following instructions on Projection Summary
Tool, copy and paste search results into the
    Projection Summary Tool Template.
  • Projection Summary Tool Template and Instructions
can be found on the PDE PVAAS website
    http//www.pde.state.pa.us
  • From Projection Summary Tool Template, copy and
paste results into PVAAS eSP Projection Summary
    Template.

14
PVAAS Student Search
Restrict your search by grade last tested.
Search for likelihoods of students bring
proficient in math and reading on a future PSSA.
15
PVAAS Student Search Results
Copy and paste student search results into the
Projection Summary Tool Template. Summary tables
and pie charts will automatically be produced for
you.

Reflections
18
Tips for Powerful Reflections
  • Keep it simplecommunicate a single idea about
    student performance.
  • 7th grade reading achievement on the state
    assessment increased 34 between 2005 and 2007.
  • Make the reflection short and easy to read.
  • The number of English Language Learners at our
district increased from 25 to 45 between 2005 and
    2007.
  • Avoid evaluative statementsjust describe what
you see in the data, not why or what to do about
    it.
  • 38 of parents state they do not receive
information about ways to help their children
    learn at home.
  • Not We need to adopt new math textbooks.
  • Not Our reading scores are going down because
we lost time with the new class schedule.

19
Examples of Reflections Using PVAAS Data
  • Remember that reflections are non-evaluative
statements drawn from the analysis of one or more
    data set(s).
  • In grade 4 math, students predicted to be Below
Basic made only one years growth while students
in the other performance categories made more
    than one years growth.
  • In Reading for both grades 4 and 5, students
predicted to be in the lowest three performance
categories made more than one years growth.
  • For students last tested in grade 8, 77 have a
high likelihood of being proficient in grade 11
reading however, only 69 of those students have
a high likelihood of being proficient in grade 11
    math.
  • Roughly 12 of students last tested in grades 4
and 5 have a low likelihood of being proficient
in reading on a future PSSA.
