SADC Context

• SADC Trade Protocol signed in August 1996 to
  establish a free trade area amongst 11
  signatories, now 13. Became operational in Sept.
  2000
• To achieve increased regional cooperation on TBT
  issues, SADC members signed an MOU on
  Standardization, Quality assurance, Accreditation
  and Metrology (SQAM) in 2000.
• The SADC-SQAM MOU provides for five structures to
  address the implementation of the Trade Protocol
  in relation to standardisation, technical
  regulations and conformity assessment issues.

Meetings/worshops

• The SADCMET regional coordinator attended the
  13th ARSO General Assembly in Accra, Ghana in
  February 2005
• The 9th SADCMET general assembly was held in
  Maputo in May 2005
• With support from PTB Germany, a Lesotho SQAM
  awareness seminar was held on 11th and 12 April
  2005.

• SADCMET Technical Committee Number 5 (TC 5) was
  established in April 2004
• Terms of reference
• Develop and Implement a working Program aimed
  at Improving Measurement Practices in small and
  medium enterprises
• SADCMET is currently running a water proficiency
  testing scheme on chemical parameters which will
  be extended next year to encompass
  microbiological parameters
