Title: EndofYear Transition

1
End-of-Year Transition
Elementary to Middle School
2
Meeting Purpose
  • Assist elementary schools with
  • obtaining accurate information
  • regarding the middle school design
  • Assist elementary schools in writing
  • appropriate and accurate IEPs for
  • middle schools

3
Remember
  • Rising 6th graders are looking forward to
  • middle school and middle school teachers
  • are looking forward to teaching them.
  • Do not think that the child will be lost at
  • middle school.
  • Help us, help you
  • Call receiving schools with specific
    questions
  • Contact ICT for answers

4
Similarities and Differences
  • Each EC student will have
  • a case manager
  • Each EC student will
  • receive services as
  • indicated on their IEP
  • Most EC students will go
  • to lunch and electives
  • (specials) with non-
  • disabled peers
  • Students typically have a
  • different teacher for each
  • subject
  • Each subject is taught in an
  • 75-90 minute block
  • Daily schedule is 3
  • academic classes and 1
  • elective
  • Most middle schools offer a
  • 9th block as a period for a
  • variety of purposes
  • Language Arts consists of
  • Reading, Writing and Spelling

5
When Writing the IEP for Middle School
  • Do not significantly increase service delivery
time, such as moving a student from consultation
to co-taught or adding EC Science and Social
    Studies classes.
  • Study Skills can be for students with low grades
or test scores. Check with the receiving schools
    for offerings (Anticipatory Service Delivery
    form)
  • Do not add accommodations that the student has
not used at the elementary level on a routine
    basis.
  • General classroom and testing accommodations must
    match.

6
Accommodations
  • Choose accommodations carefully based on data
  • Middle school is a good time to decrease
accommodations to help the student become a more
    independent learner
  • Accommodations are meant to level the playing
field, not provide advantages over a general
    education student

7
Classes and Activities Participating
Reg. ed, Consultative or Co-Taught Class
Not Participating EC Class or not applicable
  • Address Core Classes
  • Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies
  • Middle school does not have reading, writing and
    spelling
  • Address Career Tech Education classes
  • (this covers a CTE elective just in case it
    is scheduled)
  • Address Electives as "Other"
  • Art, Music, Library, Recess, Foreign Language
    not participating
  • PE and Health participating, because they are
    required
  • In the comments section, write "Other refers to
    elective classes"

8
North Carolina Testing - Accommodations/Modificati
ons
  • - Students who remain on the EXTEND2 through
middle school will likely be on the Occupational
Course of Study in high school
  • - Students can be assessed on the EXTEND2 in
one area and on the EOG in the other, if
    appropriate
  • - Address VoCats testing in the Career
Technical Education Testing section, just in case
    they take the test
  • - EXTEND1 is only for students following the
    Extended Content Standards

9
Special Education and Related Service
  • Time based on Anticipated Service Delivery form.
  • (Contact stacie.levi_at_cms.k12.nc.us to get
    any school forms you need)
  • Location Regular Ed. or Special Ed.
  • Reg/Spec is used infrequently (i.e. transitioning
out of SBS to a lesser restrictive environment)
  • LRE Statement Must address the 4 questions
    outlined by DPI. They are
  • 1) What has been tried but did not
    work?
  • 2) What are the areas of need (as
    reflected in the IEP goals)?
  • 3) Describe the type of services the
    student needs.
  • 4) When will the student participate
    with non-disabled peers?

10
Remember
  • Participations Service Delivery Time
    Continuum
  • LRE Statement
  • These 4 sections must all reflect the
    same service
  • Address the question in the Special Factors
section of the IEP regarding transition
  • Transition IEP meetings must be held within the
last 30 days of schools (beginning May 11, 2009)
  • The start date of the IEP will be Aug 25th, as
long as there is a current IEP until this start
    date
  • The end date of the IEP can remain the same

11
Options for Students Being Served
at a Separate Level (not in
self-contained programs)
  • Receive Block Separate (LA, M, SC, and SS)
    services at their home school
  • Change of placement procedures should be followed
if a self-contained categorical program may be
    appropriate

12
Students Served in Categorical Self-Contained
Programs (SBS, AU, SAC, HI)
  • Students will transition into the same type of
categorical program, unless an IEP team changes
    the setting
  • Transition to middle school is NOT a recommended
time to exit from a self-contained program (i.e.
    SBS)

13
Preparation for Meeting Middle School
Representatives
  • Know the receiving schools for all your rising
    6th grade students
  • Come to the meeting with the Elementary
Information Sheet completed for each school
