Title: TRANSFER ADVISING
1TRANSFER ADVISING
Judith Bean, Associate Vice President for
Undergraduate Studies Laura Rocchio, Assistant
Registrar Harry Winn, Program Coordinator
Family Sciences
2Basic Principles
- Maximize transfer of credit as much as possible,
especially for credits taken at Texas public
institutions. - Warn entering students with high number of
credits about possible impact of excess hours
rule. - Departments make degree plan substitutions for
the major with Registrar. - Office of Undergraduate studies determines
whether courses will meet core.
3 Transfer Advising Process
- Check transcripts for maximum credits.
- Analyze level of core completion.
- Determine which courses might apply to the major.
- Determine which courses/hours remain to be taken
at TWU. - Inform students of graduation requirements.
4Graduation Requirements
- Completion of any approved Texas core curriculum
(42 hours minimum) - Completion of major (50 at TWU)
- 6 credits in approved Global Perspectives courses
- 36 upper division credits
- Minimum 120 hours for bachelors degree
- Minimum 25 of all hours for the degree must be
taken at TWU - Others listed in catalog, p. 95

8New and Old Core
- Where to Find New and Old Core Curricula
- Core Curriculum website most current source
http//www.twu.edu/academicaffairs/coreCurriculum.
htm - New core 2007-2009 General Catalog listed in
full plus footnotes for individual core courses - New core offerings for each semester Schedule
of Classes
9Core Competencies
- Computer Literacy Students must pass a
designated computer science course or competency
examination in computer literacy. - Students who pass the computer literacy exam will
have PASS noted in Colleague (TSUM) and DARS for
core completion. - Passing score 65 on the multiple choice and 3
of the 4 applications - Exam offered during Spring and Fall semesters (3
times per semester) - Oral Communication Students must pass a
designated speech course or document successful
completion of two or more evaluated oral
presentations. - The following are courses identified with TCCNS
equivalencies to our approved speech courses - SPCH 1311 Introduction to Speech Communication
- SPCH 1315 Public Speaking
- SPCH 1321 Business and Professional
Communications
10Core Competencies (contd)
- ORAL COMMUNICATION PRESENTATIONS RUBRICS
- Approved courses in major disciplines allow
students to make 2 presentations to meet state
guidelines - For majors only
- BIOL 4681 Biology Seminar for BIOL majors only
- FS 4933 Practicum in Family Sciences for FS
majors only - KINS 1573/1583 Foundation of Assessment In
Kinesiology for KINS majors only - MU 2533 Music Theory IV for MU majors only
- MU 3323 History of Music II for MU majors only
- NURS 4614 Community Health competencies for
NURS majors only - Completed Rubrics for the 2 presentations must be
signed and delivered to the Registrars Office.
Forms should be completed in their entirety
including advisor name, advisor signature,
student ID and name. - DARS will be updated with the completed
competency after receipt of rubrics.
11No Core Course Substitutions
- No advisor, institution, or institutional
representative may approve course substitutions
or waivers of core curriculum requirements.
(THECB 2006) - Only the Texas Commissioner of Higher Education
can approve accommodations for disabled students
on a case-by-case basis. (THECB 2006) - All courses taken for core must be on an
approved core list. - Core course equivalencies can be established for
courses from private, out-of-state colleges or
for multicultural womens studies courses by core
course evaluation process - http//www.twu.edu/aca
demicaffairs/proc_for_eval_approv_core_equival_pri
v_outofstate.htm.
12Core Transfer Rules
- Any student who completes a core curriculum at
another Texas public institution does not have to
complete the TWU core (state rule). - Any content area of the core which is completed
at another institution transfers in as completing
that block at TWU (state rule). - Not all state institutions now mark students
transcripts core complete even if the student has
completed it. A student may request a letter
from the institution certifying that she/he is
core complete. If done, attach a copy of the
letter to the students academic record and/or
DARS degree audit, kept internally in the
academic unit. Letters should be forwarded to
the Office of Student Records to be posted on the
TWU transcript. The Registrars Office will
adjust DARS to reflect core complete.
13Core Transfer Rules (cont.)
- If a transcript is not marked core complete,
analysis of courses taken at the sending
institution could show core completion (core
evaluation chart online). - To determine if a student is core complete at
another public institution, visit the Texas Core
Webcenter http//statecore.its.txstate.edu.
Institutions may also make available course
catalog and core curriculum provisions at their
respective web sites. - Core area courses may or may not be marked on
transcripts. Verification of core is by referral
to the Texas Core Webcenter or sending
institutions website.
14Core Content Area Transfer

20Transfer Transcript Vs. TWU Transcript
- Compare TWU transcript after transfer credits are
posted to original transferred transcript/s with
student to determine if appropriate credits were
transferred. - If changes are needed, advisor or student
contacts Student Records Office to make changes.

TWU equivalents not in DARS but done by request
to Registrar review sending institutions
transcript and verify/document the course in core
areas (public TX schools). - Indirect equivalent courses taken out-of-state or
at a private school - not in DARS as core but
done by request to Dr. Beans office to
establish indirect equivalent, complete the core
evaluation form (send form plus course
description and syllabus
25New Degree Plans
- 120 hours for most degrees beginning fall 2007
- - Exceptions are some teacher certification
plans, some pre- PT/OT plans and a few others - Only 30 hours above the 120 hours to complete
the degree before hitting penalty for excess
hours - 6 hours in global perspectives required

29TWU Transfer Policies (Catalog p. 80-82)
- Courses are transferred to TWU at the level
upper/lower division that they were taken
unless specified otherwise in TWU transfer
equivalency guides. - Community college courses will count as lower
level unless otherwise specified. - Spring 2008 TWU will transfer only courses with
D or better, but all grades are used for GPA
calculation for admission. - For transfer of military courses, TWU follows
American Council on Education Guide.
30Global Perspectives Requirement
- Completed through courses approved by
Undergraduate Council - For graduation, not core (so core complete
students must do it) - Can double-dip with courses for the core, for
the major, or electives. - Approved global perspective courses are listed
online http//www.twu.edu/academicaffairs/Approve
d_Global_Perspectives_Courses.htm
31 Out-of-State Tuition for Repeats/ Excess Hours
- Applies to repeated courses attempted for the
3rd or more times - Applies to all excess courses attempted at any
Texas public institution after the student
reaches their degree plan hours 30 (students
who started 2006 or after), or for earlier
students, their degree plan 45 hours. - Total excess hours applies to all courses whether
student earns a grade, Incomplete, Withdrawn, or
duplicated courses. - THECB monitors all coursework taken at all public
institutions and sends lists of students with
excess hours to us.
