Theft
Since the beginning of the financial year schools
on the Borough have been victim to 91 separate
offences of theft. Theft is the most common type
of offence committed on school grounds. These
offences consist of two main types walk-in
thefts and the theft of metals. Walk-in Thefts
Walk-in thefts are the most common type with
mobile phones being the most targeted property.
Although other property includes cash and other
small electrical items such as mp3 players.
These thefts occur during the hours of the school
day, when property is left unattended during
lunchtimes or lessons such as P.E. when property
is left in changing rooms etc. Theft of Metals
Theft of metals from the school building are
becoming more frequent and are expected to
continue with the rise in the prices of scrap
metals. Offences where metals are striped from
the building predominately occur overnight,
particularly over weekends and school holidays.
The theft of lead replacement materials from one
roof shows need for signage.

Non-Residential Burglary
From 1st April there have been 77 Non-Residential
Burglaries where schools on the Borough have been
victims. It is the second most common offence
committed against schools, with 32 schools on the
Borough being victims of at least one offence in
the last eight months. The burglaries occur
overnight out school hours, and also at weekends
and during school holidays when fewer people are
on the premises. The most prevalent method of
gaining entry to the school buildings is forcing
or smashing windows, on much fewer occasions
entry has been gained by forcing doors. Property
stolen tends to focus on electrical school
equipments such as computers, laptops and
projectors. Unfortunately, little of this
property is recovered. A mini series of offences
on the Borough involved the schools safes either
being stolen or forced open for cash and
cheques. Suspects are rarely seen at these
offences, and descriptions of suspects are
usually only gathered from premises where CCTV is
operation. Suspect are usually described as being
white males, with ages ranging between 14 and
20.
