  Toronto/Peel Region (popn 3.1M)
• Conducts prospective, population-based
  surveillance for selected invasive bacterial
  diseases
• Invasive disease defined as that associated with
  positive culture from a normally sterile site

Surveillance for Streptococcus pneumoniae

• Laboratories report all sterile site cultures and
  send bacterial isolates to study lab
• Basic information (age, site culture, diagnosis)
  collected on all cases
• Detailed chart review with consent (underlying
  disease, vaccine status)
