Title: Is Perth sustainable

1
Is Perth sustainable?
2
  • Just how big has Perth become?
  • Population over 1.5 million
  • At 160kms in length, stretching from South
Mandurah to Yanchep, Perth is now approximately
    the size of Ireland
  • Perth has an area greater than London, which has
    6-8 times the population
  • Former Lord Mayor, Peter Nattrass proudly
declared 800 people a month were moving to Perth
  • It is estimated by 2021 there will be ¼ million
    people living in Wanneroo alone.
  • SOS Save Our State, Today Tonight, Tuesday 24
    April, 2007

3
What more can we expect? Perths current
population is 1.5 million, but expected to double
to 3 million by 2050 It took 178 years for Perth
to reach 1.5 million, but the addition of another
1.5 million to our city will take just over 40
years where will they all live? How will we
house them, transport them, provide them with
water, services, etc? Is our city
sustainable? Johnstone, A. 2008. Topic 1
Introduction. Cities Sustainability (STP220).
Lecture notes 19th February 2008. Murdoch.
Murdoch University.

The earliest cities were small, self-contained,
situated close to a water-supply. Known as
Walking Cities, they were kept to a maximum of
approx. five kilometers across, making all
destinations accessible within a half an hour.
As a result, development was concentrative, with
up to 200 people accommodated per hectare and a
diversified use of land therein (commercial,
residential and community gathering places).
Newman Kenworthy, Sustainability Citiies,
1999
5
Walking Cities survived until mid 19th century,
when city form began to change under pressures
brought about by the Industrial Revolution. As
populations swelled, cities struggled with
pollution, overcrowding, sewerage, crime. With
the advent of new, mechanized forms of mass
transport, the means to free up the congestion
that cities were experiencing became available.
Newman Kenworthy, Sustainability Cities,
1999)
6
The Marchetti Principle (in other words, the
nature of humans!)
The Lecturers view In an urban environment,
people will spatially arrange their activities to
the effect that their longest daily one-way trip
(usually the commute to work) averages at 30
minutes travel time. The Average Persons
view People do not want to travel more than an
hour a day, on average, if they can possibly help
it!
7
So, when we were able to produce mechanized forms
of transport, such as trams, later trains, we
were able to travel a greater distance, but more
or less in the same time frame of half an hour.
We were then able to expand our cities
boundaries up to 30kms apart, from the original
5kms. Newman Kenworthy, Sustainability
Cities, 1999

And the other half of Network City? How to
connect up different activity hubs throughout
Perth, moving huge numbers of people efficiently,
economically, and environmentally
sensitively. We need ENHANCED public transport.
