2Work-Life Balance
- We all spend a lot of our time at work
- but do you feel as if you live to work - or
work to live?
3Why Work-Life Balance?
- UNISON cares about the Work-Life Balance debate
because YOUR life should be about more than just
your job!
4What is Work-Life Balance?
- Work-Life Balance is a Government initiative
to make working time and practices more
flexible - so that work does not have an adverse
impact on the private lives of workers.
5What is UNISON doing about it?
- UNISON hopes to ENGAGE members in this debate
- through EXPLAINING the issues
- and ENABLING better local bargaining
- by EMPOWERING our members.
6ENGAGE - Its relevant to me
- Making available more flexible working patterns
allows - people who do not have enough work, or
- people who have too much work, or
- people who need irregular working hours, or
- people who need a choice of workplace
- to fit work into the other things that are
going on in the rest of their lives.
7ENGAGE -Its relevant to me
- For UNISON members, striking a better balance
might enable - parents and carers to support their dependants
better - more disabled people to access work
- more people to return to education or study
- others to take up interests outside work, e.g.
competitive sport - people to be more active in their community,
- - whilst keeping their jobs but working
different patters.
8EXPLAINING - Why does work-life balance matter?
- As work becomes longer and more stressful...
- 1 in 3 men work 50 hours a week
- 58 of women in full time employment do unpaid
overtime - one or both parents regularly work in the evening
in a quarter of households in Britain
9EXPLAINING - Why does work-life balance matter?
- As work becomes longer and more stressful...
- there is a negative impact on family life, and
- Two thirds of permanent employees feel their
working hours undermine their family life - Nearly a third of workers would sacrifice pay
increases for more leisure time or shorter
working hours.
10EXPLAINING - Why does work-life balance matter?
- As work becomes longer and more stressful there
is a negative impact on family life - and a greater sense of insecurity and alienation.
- More people live alone today than ever before
58 million people live in 24 million separate
households - Only one third of employees feel that their job
is secure - Nearly half of all employed men believe that they
will have a period of unemployment
11EXPLAINING - Why does work-life balance matter?
- Work-Life Balance matters because,
- wherever possible, all workers should have a
right to work that does not damage their social
responsibilities.
12ENABLING - What can be done?
- Have you thought of how different ways of working
could mean a better work-life balance?
13ENABLING - What can be done?
- There are a number of ways in which different
workers are organising themselves in order to
juggle commitments both in and outside of work.
14ENABLING - What can be done?
flexitime, part-time working, job-sharing,
annualised hours, sabbaticals, term- time
working, teleworking, home working, V-time,
career breaks, and compressed-working-weeks
15ENABLING - What can be done?
- better care facilities (e.g. crèche), improved
maternity, paternity, and parental leave,
membership social clubs, gyms, etc.
These are just some measures that will help you
juggle all your responsibilities and interests so
that you achieve the right work-life balance
16ENABLING - What can be done?
- but remember these will only work where
- new patterns fit in with the work that needs to
be done, and with the co-operation of your
colleagues!
17ENABLING - What can be done?
- WARNING!
- Work Life Balance is NOT about getting more
time-off or working less. - It IS about organising work differently to
achieve a better balance between work and other
areas of your life
18EMPOWERING - Reaching the right balance
- High quality public services are best delivered
through team work, and - Work-Life Balance policies will only be
successful where ALL staff have an opportunity to
share the benefits.
19EMPOWERING - Reaching the right balance
- Work-Life Balance policies address some of the
biggest problems in todays public sector-
questions of how to - improve recruitment and retention
- reduce absenteeism
- improve morale and productivity
- improve services to customers and service users
20EMPOWERING - Reaching the right balance
- so employers and service users also benefit
from public service workers having a better
work-life balance!
21EMPOWERING - Reaching the right balance
- Work Life Balance assumes that
- People can afford to take some time off work-
- The Living wage Campaign
- Working practices benefit the service provided-
- Positively Public
- Benefits are offered to all employees-
- Fairness in the workplace
22EMPOWERING - Reaching the right balance
- Therefore
- successful Work-Life Balance policies work
hand-in-hand with other UNISON priorities to
deliver a better deal for our members and top
quality public services.
