text or images posted on personal websites or
transmitted via email or cell phones. - Most often, cyber bullying is just another tool
for the person who bullies face-to-face. However,
it is becoming more common for those who are
being bullied in the playground to retaliate
online. Sometimes cyber bullying happens as a
result of a relationship break up. It can also be
based on fear or prejudice. And sometimes, some
young people just think it is a fun game. - My friend found this website and she started
making up stories and replies to others. I'm
worried shes gonna hurt someones feelings. What
should I do??? - Whatever its origin, bullying is never okay.

integrated into curriculum.

stories from NetAlert during Year Meetings. - Advice given to parents regularly through

- Cyberbullying and Defamation
- The NSW Police define cyberbullying as, the use
of e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, pagers,
cell phones, or other forms of information
technology to deliberately harass, threaten, or
intimidate someone.. - Australian law defines defamation as a person
who 'publishes' an assertion of fact or a comment
that - injures - or, importantly, is 'likely' to injure
- the personal, professional, trade or business
reputation of an individual or a company - exposes them to ridicule or
- cause people to avoid them
- If a case of cyberbullying affects a student
outside of school, the following course of action
should be taken - The student immediately informs his/her
parents/carers. - The abuse is reported to the website owner or
webmaster. - If the concern is considered criminal (eg
threatening violence, child pornography) then the
police should be informed immediately.
8- Student ICT Policy Ammendments
- Our school recognises that the majority of cases
of cyberbullying or defamation occur outside of
its controlled network. However to ensure that
students and parents are aware of the correct
actions to take, this policy includes protection
for its own name, its crest and staff members as
well. - A case of cyberbullying/defamation against a
staff member(s) of the school occurs if - A video or image of a school staff member(s) is
placed on a public website without the permission
of the staff member(s). - Information about a staff member(s) including
their name is placed on a public website without
the permission of the staff member(s). - Our school name or crest is published on a pubic
website without the written permission of the
Principal or Catholic Education Office. - Cases of cyberbullying or defamation of staff
will be seriously dealt with by the Principal in
accordance to the rules outlined in the policy
and all other school based discipline policies.
9 10What can I do? Understand that your actions can
cause harm to unseen others. Learn to do what is
right through your own moral code rather than in
response to the potential of detection and
punishment. Learn to use effective
decision-making strategies to help guide your
behaviour in a responsible way. Some questions
to ask yourselfWhat is motivating me to behave
this way?Am I showing respect for others and
myself?How would I feel if someone did this to
me or my best friend?What would happen if
everybody decided to do this?Do I want to be
part of the problem or part of the solution?
11ActionIf you are being harassed online, take the
following actions immediately Tell an adult you
trust. This can be a teacher, parent, older
sibling or grandparent someone who can help you
to do something about it. Leave the area or stop
the activity. People who bully get their kicks
from knowing theyve upset their target. Dont
let them know theyve upset you, and youve taken
away half their fun. Easier said than done when
its face-to-face, but if its on your mobile or
the Internet easy! Block the senders
messages. If you are being bullied through e-mail
or instant messaging, block the senders
messages. Never reply to harassing messages.
Keep a record. Save any harassing messages and
record the time and date that you received them.
Advise your Service Provider. Most service
providers have appropriate use policies that
restrict users from harassing others. They can
respond to reports of cyber bullying over their
networks, or help you track down the appropriate
service provider to respond to. Report to
police. If the bullying includes physical
threats, or pornography tell the police. Some
people think that they can get away with it
because they believe it is anonymous. They are
wrong. Most can be traced and its a criminal
offence to use a mobile phone or any form of
communication to menace or harass or offend
another person
