Purpose of Switches
  • Switches offer access to anything electronic for
    persons with disabilities.
  • They are a great way for the individual to begin
    to experience independent control.
  • They work to turn appliances on and off or to
indicate choices when used with software.

3
Who can use switches?
  • Physical disabilities- with a single reliable
movement can cause a radio to turn on.
  • Sensory impairments- individual learns that they
can be the controlling source of sound, light and
    vibration.
  • Cognitive impairments- allow interaction with
toys and computers with a single button, this
limits the need for complex directions.

4
What can switches be used for?
  • Environmental Control- appliances such as fans,
radios, blenders, and televisions found in homes
    and schools.
  • Play and exploration- using switches
independently to participate in games and other
    recreation activities.Light Brite/ Spin art.

5
Uses continued..
  • Movement- this can be experienced with motorized
mobility items such as powered wheelchairs and
motorized cars that are driven with single and
    multiple switches.
  • Computer Access- switches can be used in
combination with other input devices such as head
pointers, and voice dictation software. This
gives full access to any commercial software
    program.

6
Uses continued.
  • Communication-this is encouraged through early
switch use. Single switch devices with recorded
messages provide a way to relate language at hand
