Project Management
  • Chapter 9
  • Identifying the Tasks and Activities

3
Identifying the Tasks and Activities
  • WBS decomposing a large activity into smaller
activities until the work is described in
    detail to manage properly
  • Challenge identification of the right activities
  • Chapter 9 deals with the identification of tasks
and activities which are used by software
engineers to produce the elements of a WBS and it
is shown how they are arranged in the life cycle
models in order to have best effect

4
Chapter 9
  • Activity An element of work performed during
the course of a project. An activity normally has
an expected duration, an expected cost, and
    expected resource requirements.
  • Activities can be divided into tasks.
  • Task A generic term for work that is not
included in the WBS but that potentially could be
a further decomposition of work by the
    individuals responsible for that work.
  • The lowest level of effort on a project.

5
Identifying the Tasks and Activities
  • Characteristics of activity identification
  • Label
  • -gt meaningful, clear, verb-noun sentences
  • Size
  • optimal chunk of work that can reasonably be
done by one unit of resource in a relatively
    short period of time
  • Source
  • if available from previous projects
  • otherwise inventing or using sources from
organisations, such as SEI, ISO, IEEE

6
Chapter 9
  • Usage of sources as a guide to activity
identification for a given software project
  • IEEE 1074 Software Development Product Life
Cycle Processes and Activities gt see book pages
    264-265, table 9-1

7
Identifying the Tasks and Activities
  • Challenge for every software development project
manager to map the activities described in table
9-1 into a life-cycle model that fits the project
at hand and then to describe the activities to
the organisations personnel in such a way that
they can understand and execute them

8
Chapter 9
  • Software Development Life Cycle Activities
  • each of the 6 life cycle models mentioned in
chapter 4, has a different set of activities and
tasks for the main development portions
  • however, the integral process activities (IPAs)
are the same for each model (see p. 267)
  • IPAs
  • project monitoring and control
  • software quality management
  • verification and validation
  • software configuration management
  • documentation development
  • training
