Title: Soil Data Viewer

1
Soil Data Viewer
  • Making it work for Field Offices

2
If SDV is not giving you what you wantwhat are
the options?
  • Modify the SDV rules database
  • Modify the soils Access database
  • Modify SDV output
  • Maps
  • Reports
  • Create a map or report manually
  • Query/export/report data from the soils Access
    database

3
Modifying the SDV Rules Database
  • Change the descriptive text
  • Change the ArcView legend
  • Map a new property/interpretation
  • Must be in the soils Access database
  • If not new NASIS SSURGO download
  • Example phosphorous loading index
  • Cannot modify the Reports (to my knowledge)
  • Advantages
  • Permanence available to FO staff for every map,
    every cooperator.
  • Fits within the system no extra data or maps or
files to remember and keep track of
  • Disadvantages
  • Can be somewhat of a hassle (but I can help!)
  • Institutional issues who gets the modified SDV?
Who gets the new SSURGO download? What happens
when the next statewide data refresh comes along?

4
Modify the soils Access database
  • Add data directly to the database (edit the soils
    database).
  • Any data in the soils database can be mapped via
    SDV (theoretically).
  • Create a new NASIS SSURGO download that includes
    the data you seek.
  • Warning Institutional issues
  • Any changes that you make will not be considered
    official.
  • Other offices will not have access to your
revisions (unless you send it to them).
  • Future data refresh events will over-write your
    changes.

5
Modify SDV Output
  • Maps in ArcView
  • Change the legend (legend editor)
  • Change / convert data in the shapefile attribute
    table e.g.,
  • Calculate a new column cm to inches
  • Add values into an existing column hydric
    inclusions
  • Reports
  • Edit to suit in MS Word
  • Disadvantage A one-time-only solution. You must
save the modified maps/reports to re-use them. A
new SDV session will require a redo on your edits.

6
Create a map or report manually
  • Query the soils Access database for the
    properties you want, and.
  • 1) Export the results to a .dbf file, and join
the .dbf to the shapefile attribute table, or
  • 2) Create an Access Report from your query
    results.
  • Disadvantage A one-time-only solution. You must
save and keep track of the tables/reports to
re-use them. If you save queries and reports in
the soils Access database, you may lose them in a
    future data refresh event.

7
SDV changes on the horizon
  • Toolkit will convert to ArcGIS, with a new SDV.
  • Any day now.
  • The new SDV may solve all of your problems (!)
  • How much time/effort do you want to invest in the
    current, ArcView-based SDV?
