2
Managed Bandwidth (SJ5 UKLight)
  • SuperJANET5 has the capability to provision
wavelengths at 10Gbit/s, and 40Gbit/s in the
    future
  • UKLight infrastructure will be migrated to
SuperJANET5 to provide a flexible platform for
provisioning of 1Gbit/s (and smaller) wavelengths
  • For RNOs connected to UKLight the connection to
SuperJANET5 will be via the 10Gbit/s bandwidth
    channel wavelength for development
  • For those RNOs that dont have a UKLight
connection UKERNA will work with them to
determine how best to make use of the 10Gbit/s
    bandwidth channel wavelength

3
International Managed Bandwidth
  • GEANT is providing managed bandwidth services at
1Gbit/s and 10Gbit/s under the GEANT umbrella
  • DANTE also developing intercontinental extensions
    to the service
  • UKLight connection to NetherLight to be replaced
with GEANT provisioning. Replacement of the
connection to Starlight will also be examined

4
JANET Managed Bandwidth Policy Aims
  • Any policy developed now will be interim due to
the developing nature of this service
  • Managed bandwidth services will need to be
provisioned end-to-end all legs nationally and
internationally therefore need to be considered
  • Charging policy If charges made then they should
be predictable and designed to enable use
  • Access policy should also promote use dovetail
    with JANET connection policy

5
JANET Managed Bandwidth Policy thinking
  • Access to bandwidth channels upto 1Gbit/s should
be free at point of use
  • Right to refuse a service request if capacity or
    budget exhausted.
  • Requests for managed bandwidth granted on a fixed
    term basis.
  • Access to bandwidth gt1Gbit/s should be charged
    for.

6
JANET Managed Bandwidth Industrial research
organisations
  • Use of bandwidth channels may be made by
    industrial research organisations
  • Existing e-Science policy should be applied.

7
JANET Managed Bandwidth Extension to regional
networks
  • Access and charging policies extended to regional
    networks
  • Funding regime therefore to be developed within
    the RPAN contract
  • Recognised that bandwidth channel provisioning
    will not be universally available

8
JANET Managed Bandwidth Extension to
institutional infrastructures
  • A matter for institutions involved
  • Any provision of a bandwidth channel is made
subject to a formal commitment by the host
    institutions

9
Options for implementation of Managed Bandwidth
  • Hard separability / partitioning
  • Fibre level
  • Wavelength level
  • Circuit level
  • Soft (statistical) partitioning
  • Path/tunnel technique with QoS
  • Requirement demand underpins the technical
    approach
