2
Early Life
  • Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South
Africa. He was born into a Thembu Xhosha family
and in the village of Qunu. His father was the
Chief of Tembu but died when Mandela turned 10.
  • When he turned seven he became the first in his
family to attend school where his teacher named
him Nelson. When he was sixteen, he attended
Wesleyan College but was suspended at the end of
the year for protesting against school policies.

Struggles and Hardships
  • On August 5, 1962, Mandela was imprisoned for
    organizing sabotage against military, government,
and civilians to try and end apartheid. He was
    there for 27 years.
  • Throughout his life he was denied political,
social and economical rights because of the
    apartheid. Apartheid, meaning separateness in
Afrikaans, was a form of government like
    segregation.

Here is an example of one of the injustices the
apartheid caused blacks couldnt even be on the
same side of the beach as whites.

Major Accomplishments and Contributions To the
World
  • Since retiring from being the first
democratically elected president of South Africa,
he has helped draw attention to the epidemic of
AIDS/HIV within his country, once again helping
    his people.
  • He helped destroy the racial segregation and
injustices in his country. That is important
because then everyone could live equality no
matter their race, similar to Martin Luther King
Jr. did for the United States.
