Introduction to ArcGIS
  • A product of ESRI
  • Consists of ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo
  • All look and work the same they differ in how
    much they can do
  • With ArcView you can
  • make maps query data
  • analyze spatial relationships
  • edit feature shapes and attributes

3
  • With ArcEditor you can
  • Create and edit certain spatial data formats that
can be displayed in ArcView but not edited
  • ArcInfo has more tools than both ArcView and
ArcEditor for analyzing certain kinds of spatial
    data
  • It includes ArcInfo Workstation
  • A separate system that has been a GIS standard
for many years and still widely used

4
  • Each version of ArcGIS includes three
    applications
  • ArcMap the main mapping platform
  • ArcCatalog for browsing spatial data on your
    computer or the internet
  • ArcToolbox to convert spatial data from one
format to another change map projections
  • Standard ArcGIS comes with three extensions
  • ArcGIS Spatial Analyst
  • ArcGIS 3D Analyst
  • ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst

5
  • With ArcGIS Spatial Analyst you can
  • Create raster surfaces
  • Query them and do overlay analysis on them
  • With ArcGIS 3D Analyst you can
  • Visualize and analyze vector and raster data in 3
    dimensions
  • fly through terrain and examine it from any
    angle
  • Determine which areas on a surface are visible
    from given points

6
  • With ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst you can
  • Create continuous surfaces from a small number of
sample points by predicting the values at
    unsampled locations
