2THE FIRST SCHOOL
- The first school in Lithuania to be mentioned in
historical sources is the Cathedral School of
Vilnius, 1397.
The students were boys, mostly the sons of
gentry. The curriculum included such subjects as
rhetoric, dialectic, music, Latin, Greek and
classical culture.
3- The Reformation in the 16 th century gave the
rise to the establishment of new schools not only
in the cities but also on estates. At this time
also the first school of higher education was set
up by Abraomas Kulvietis, one of the best
educated men in Lithuania at that time.
4VILNIUS UNIVERSITY
- In 1579 in accordance with the priviledge granted
by King Stephan Bathory, The University of
Vilnius was established. It was closed in 1832.
This institution of education was one of the most
authoritative institutions of higher education
throughout East and Central Europe.
5- During the period between the two world wars,
Lithuanias education was concentrated in Kaunas,
where a university and several other higher
learning institutions were established.
Meanwhile, in Polish occupied Vilnius, the old
university was revived and named after Stephan
Bathory.
6- During the years of the Soviet occupation
(1940-1990) Lithuania had a strictly centralized
educational system (ruled by the Moscow
authorities). Learning Russian was compulsory,
but secondary and higher education were available
in Lithuanian, as well as numerous cultural
activities. Though dominated by communist
ideology, the system had a positive influence on
the development of the network of schools.

9Pre school Education
- Pre school education is provided for children
from the age of 1 to 6. Pre school education is
not compulsory. Pre school education is
implemented by nursuries, nursary
kindergartens, kindergartens, kindergarten
schools and other schools.
10Primary School
- A child starts the first grade when he turns
seven. Primary school children are not given
grades. At least two or three times per year the
teacher discusses the progress of learners with
their parents. The primary education lasts for 4
years.
11Basic School
- It lasts for 6 years from grades 5th 10th. Upon
completion of the basic school students have to
pass exams Lithuanian and Mathematics.
12(Upper) Secondary Schools
- Secondary school lasts for 2 years (11th to 12th
grades) (age 16/17 to 18/19).
13- Other types of general education schools include
gymnasiums and international baccalaureate
schools. Gymnasiums usually have forms 1st to 4th
consisting of pupils in their 9th to 12th school
years. Lithuanian gymnasiums specialize in the
Humanities, Practical Arts and Fine Arts.
14- Secondary education ends in taking Maturity
examinations. The Lithuanian Language exam is
compulsory, while the other exams are elective.
15- Students can take school level exams based on
general curriculum or national level exams
based on expanded curriculum. National level
examinations take place at national level exam
centres. The papers are coded and assessed at
national exam centres. Successful students are
awarded a school-leaving certificate that gives
access to higher education.
16- Students can stay at school for 12 years, but
some of them leave school having finished at the
10th grade as compulsory education ends then. In
trade schools and vocational junior colleges they
can get both secondary education and the
qualifications.
17Those who have Maturity Certificates can pursue
higher education.
18- In Lithuania, higher education institutions
provide study programmes of varying length and
levels. The institutions are of two types
Universities and colleges - non-university higher
education establishments. Higher education
institutions may be both State and non-State
institutions.
19- There are 15 state schools of higher education in
our country 7 universities, 6 academies and 2
institutes, as well as 3 clerical seminaries.
University level first stage is Basic studies
which lead to a Bachelor's Degree. Basic studies
last for 4 years. University level second stage
is specialized or Master's studies which last for
2 years. University level third stage Residency,
Art post-graduate course, Doctoral studies and
last for 3-5 years.
20- In Lithuania children go to school 5 days a
week. There is no school on Saturdays and
Sundays. The school year begins in September and
ends in the middle of June. The school year is
divided into 3 terms or 2 semesters.
21- In the curriculum of all school are included
basic subjects such as Lithuanian, Mathematics,
History, Science, Computer studies, Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, modern foreign languages and
other subjects. Religious education is provided
for all pupils, but parents can choose either to
send their children to classes of religion or
ethics.
22- Duration of the class is 45 minutes.
- Learning achievements are assessed on the 10
point scale) - School holidays autumn (7 calendar days),
Christmas (14 calendar days), Easter (7 calendar
days) and summer holidays (at least two months)
