2eTwinning in shortWHAT IS IT
- eTwinning is a programme of the European
Commission to foster - (long term) partnerships of pairs of schools
- Across countries
- Around innovative pedagogical projects
- . Using ICT
- . And sharing good practice
- Ambitious goals, in 3 years around 10 of the
european schools should participate - A very big test bed for new ideas, a collective
learning arena
3eTwinningthe expected benefits
- Schools, teachers and pupils know other cultures
(and educational cultures) and learn to work
together overcoming and enriching from
differences - Schools, teachers and pupils learn how to work in
a multilingual environment - Schools, teachers and pupils learn how to work
over the distance using modern communication
tools, and ICT
4Fundamental skills in the European Union
knowledge society
- Skills that are key
- in the IT based knowledge society they will work
in a similar way in which they will work in
companies, government or live in society - In this area of the world with no comparison in
the richness and diversity of cultural heritage,
but the area of the world in which cooperation
requires the strongest conscious effort - In the area of the world in which we are
developing the most advanced democracy concepts
(including the eGoverment concepts)
5Top level political goalsObjectives of eTwinning
- Building up an European dimension in education
- Demonstrating the potential of ICT (Information
and Communication Technologies) for schools
networking - Giving visibility and recognition to the good
work of teachers and trainers
61. Building up an European dimension in education
- A political priority, requested by EU Heads of
State and of Government at the Barcelona Council,
2002 - Towards the knowledge society (Lisbon strategy)
- Initiated, designed and financed by the
Commission as the main action of the eLearning
Programme - To be managed in close cooperation between the
Commission and Member States
72. Demonstrating the potential of ICTfor
schools cooperation and networking
- Following a strong effort by Member States, most
schools in Europe are connected to Internet and
have an acceptable informatics equipment - The real challenge now is a pedagogical, good,
and creative use of these new tools - While the emphasis has long been put on
technology, the highest value of ICT tools lies
on communication and collaboration, over borders,
across cultures. -
83. Giving visibility and recognition to the
good work of teachers and trainers
- eTwinning is first and foremost a teachers
action - Its full name is fostering schools twinning via
Internet and promotion of teacher training - eTwinning does not build on external funding but
on the professionalism and motivation of teachers - eTwinning seeks to identify and highlight good
practice in the pedagogical use of ICT and to
facilitate contacts and exchanges between teachers
9What is new in eTwinning?
- eTwinning is a small scale, user-friendly
exercise, ideally paving the way to
trans-national projects - eTwinning must be kept simple, light and personal
- eTwinning is a learning exercise for teachers,
for schools and for the new integrated programme
10How does eTwinning programme managed?
- eTwinning works by providing support, guidance,
motivation and recognition to participants -
- eTwinning is based in two levels of support
- European level CSS - Central Support Services
- National and regional level NSS - National
Support Services - eTwinning will only succeed if there is a good
and permanent cooperation between all actors
11European dimension in education
- Traditional school exchanges
- Most schools in Europe have already experienced
traditional language exchanges. The main goals of
these are to practice a foreign language and to
enjoy a full immersion in a foreign culture. - A collaborative project can be defined as an
activity (in general, involving more subjects) on
a certain theme developed by teachers in both
schools. - Advanced school twinning
- School twinning can be described as the most
elaborated form of schools exchanges. - It happens when two schools from two different
countries start working together over a long
period of time. - The schools agree on common pedagogical
objectives and involve as many people as possible
decision-makers, headmasters, teachers, pupils
and their parents.
