2
Context
  • Flexible Learning Leader focus
  • Flexible Learning models that suit the needs of
15-19 year olds, particularly in VET in Schools
    context
  • LeAP - Tas Learning Architecture Project
  • Project Manager of the LMS Review sub-project
  • (refer LeAP presentation Dont get lost in the
technology, Phil Dilger, LeAP Project manager)

3
3 areas to address
  • Concepts, language and terminology (culinary

Jargon cont
  • Definitions provide meaning for individual terms
  • Language evolves over time
  • New terms emerge
  • MCEETYA Learning Architecture Framework has
    definitions
  • More extended list in Framework for Evaluating
    Online Learning Systems (in trial)
  • Metaphors help build mental maps of how it all
    fits together

Producing quality outcomes
  • When planning, we need to keep in mind that an
excellent meal can be prepared from a relatively
    unsophisticated kitchen, while a sophisticated
kitchen does not necessarily guarantee an
excellent meal. Much depends on the cook, the raw
materials and techniques at his/her disposal. But
a good cook in a good kitchen will generally
    produce excellent results.

9
Producing quality outcomes
  • The person who has not travelled widely thinks
his or her mother is the best cook.
  • Ugandan Proverb ( - )
  • Even the best cooking pot will not produce food.
  • Chinese proverb

10
Culinary arts/ art of teaching
Catering to individual needs
Range of cuisines/ teaching styles
Different ways to dine - alone/in groups
formal/informal A la carte/ smorgasboard/banquet
Need to consider balanced nutrition, variety,
individual requirements
11
Meeting the needs of learners
  • Not just (or even mainly) about software
    platforms
  • Appropriate pedagogy needs to be planned for
    effective outcomes
  • Research shows that blended models of learning
are more effective than 100 online
  • Learning online has implications for student
    support

12
Convergence and emergence
  • planning learning and teaching

13
Being online is empowering
  • Teachers and learners are empowered by having an
easy to use online space where learning materials
can be organised, information posted and
    communication take place. (scaffolding into
    online learning)
  • This process is becoming easier with emerging
tools that are not necessarily marketed as
    Learning Management Systems

14

    Symposium)

    Australian schools?
  • The costs, benefits and risks of open source
software a view from the chalkface
