UMMC Background

• 2 MM square feet under roof
• 6 contiguous buildings varying in age from 1935
  to 2005
• Various off-site properties 19 residential
  homes, clinics, offices, shelter
• Variety of pest challenges
• Fruit and other types of flies
• Roaches
• Mice/rats

Project Background

• Involvement with IPM began about 2 years ago.
• Initial site survey done. No follow-up action by
  UMMC.
• IPM team came back (kudos for their perseverance
  ?)

Impressions

• Bugs 101 An eye opening experience
• Learned about our vulnerabilities
• Where pests enter
• How our practices contribute to our problem
• How a change in practice can solve the problem
  with minimal pesticide usage
• What we shouldve been asking our pest control
  contractor to do

Two instances

• Office area
• Staff living in fear of mice (and water bugs)
• Conditions
• Crowded
• Lots of accumulated clutter
• Abundant food
• Poor cleaning
• Openings into wall cavities and chases
• Solutions
• Clean sweep
• Eliminate food storage or else
• Plug openings
• Snap traps on a schedule

• Use a commercial pest control vendor plus liberal
  self application of pesticides ?

• Confirmed routes of entry recommendations to
  control
• Eliminate self application
• Training for maintenance staff
