  • OVERALL OBEJECTIVE
  • Improved milk hygiene from udder to the consumer
    and preservation during the surplus seasons.

OBJECTIVES
  • Improve the hygiene
  • Improve transportation system by introducing
    evaporative cooling.
  • Encourage use of traditional milk containers
  • Introduce dairy processing techniques to preserve
    milk during times of surplus.
  • Construction of 12 village milk centres to enable
    the beneficiaries organise their milk trade
    better.

ACTIVITIES TO DATE
  • TOT WORKSHOP HELD IN GARDO AT THE MAANDEQ MILK
    FACTORY(UNA/EC)
  • Mastitis screening
  • Milking hygiene
  • Milk handling hygiene
  • Encourage use of traditional containers or modern
    aluminium milk cans as opposed to plastic jerry
    cans
  • Dairy products processing techniques to preserve
    during surplus seasons sweets, ghee, cheese,
    fermented products)

ACTVITIES TO DATE
  • Carried 10 stakeholders workshops involving all
    the 12 sites-2 of the workshops were combined
    i.e. Faleryalle and Garaclagudal, Yombeys and
    Hasbahalle.
  • Working committees of for the 12 sites formed
    with the appointment of office holders-Chairman,
    Secretary, Treasurer.
  • Land donations for the construction sites of the
    village milk centres.

ACTIVITIES TO DATE
  • Committee meetings to identify training needs for
    the office holders as pertaining to the running
    of the Village milk centres
  • Follow up by the Socio-economic consultant to
    also identify the same above and OVIs for the
    projects impact

ACTIVITIES TO DATE
  • Carried milk quality monitoring runs in
    catchments areas around Garowe
  • Chemical composition of the milk. Checked for
    adulteration of milk. camel and goat)
  • Bacterial load of the milk at various stages.
    i.e. The producer points, transporters and market
    level
  • These results will be used as controls during the
    implementation of the project to ascertain the
    impact of the project.

ACTIVITIES TO DATE
  • Carried out successful Milk Days in Garowe and
    Bosaso.
  • Dramatisation and Poems by the Puntland Walalos.
  • Minister of Livestock and Agriculture and
    Enviroment.(guest of honour) women milk vendors,
    students, local authorities, INGOs, local NGOs
    and the general public.
  • Media coverage by various media companies.

ACTIVITIES TO DATE
  • Distributed aluminium milk cans to the
    beneficiaries through their respective village
    milk centres working committees.

Constraints and shortcomings
  • Delay in construction of the village milk centres
    due to budget amendment
  • Failed to carry out village awareness activities
    due failed delivery of promises to the
    beneficiaries. i.e. VMC constructions
  • Insecurity whereby expatriates were evacuated at
    one point.
