Title: DISASTER RISK REDUCTION
1DISASTER RISK REDUCTION PREPAREDNESS
2- Definition
- The term disaster reduction or disaster risk
reduction is often used to mean the broad
development and application of policies,
strategies and practices to minimize
vulnerabilities and disaster risks throughout
society, through prevention, mitigation and
preparedness.
3Disaster risk reduction a strategic priority
- The importance of disaster risk reduction in all
its forms is reflected in the Global Agenda for
Humanitarian Action. - This was adopted at the 28th International
Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent
which took place in Geneva in December 2003. - Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and the states
party to the Geneva Conventions committed a plan
of action that aims to reduce vulnerability in
relation to the risk and impact of disasters. - Has since been reiterated in the International
Federations Global Agenda
4- Disaster Risk Reduction is addressed through
three main strategies - Building capacity in disaster preparedness to
better respond to disasters, - Promoting mitigation activities to reduce the
impact of hazards - Ensuring development projects, such as adopt
village which is risk and disaster prone area
(e.g Kg Kuala Muda, Kedah, Kpg Peta, Johor etc)
