General Safety Rules
  • Always wear safety glasses
  • Take care of baggy clothes
  • Tie back long hair
  • Take care of loose jewelry
  • No horseplay
  • No alcohol or drugs

3
Table Saw
Blade should be checked for tightness
When changing the blade or servicing the saw,
the power disconnect must be locked in the "off"
position.
The operator should stand to the side of the wood
while it is being fed through the saw.
When boards over 3 feet in any dimension are
cut, a helper should be used to assist in
supporting the work
Verify location of off switch and/or emergency
power disconnect
4
Jointer
When working a piece of wood, follow the 3 inch
radius rule, the hands must never be closer than
3 inches to the cutterhead
Make sure machine guards are in place and in good
working order. Use them at all times
Never apply pressure to stock directly over the
cutterhead
Shut off the power and do notleave until the
wheel has come to a complete stop and the work
area is clean when finished using the machine
Before turning on the machine, remove all extra
equipment
5
Planer
  • Keep the machine guards in place at all times.
Do not operate the machine with the guards off
  • Stand to the left side out of line with the
table and make sure no one else is standing in
    line with the table
  • Keep hands outside the
  • machine, never reach under
  • the guards to try to clear stock
  • that stops feeling
  • Do not attempt to plane boards
  • shorter than 18
  • Never leave the machine
  • running unattended

6
When changing the blade or servicing the saw, the
power disconnect must be locked in the "off"
position. For saws with a cord and plug, the saw
must be unplugged. The saw must be tested after
disconnecting power and before beginning service.
All portions of the saw blade must be enclosed or
guarded except the portion between the bottom of
the guide rolls and the table.
Band Saw
A blade tension control device with an indicator
must be present on all band saws.
Band saws must not be run at speeds in excess of
the manufacturer's recommended speed.
The blade guard should be kept adjusted as close
as possible to the table without interfering with
movement of the stock.
7
Router
Do not try to increase the bit's depth of cut by
inserting less of the shank in the collet.
Develop the habit of turning off the router
immediately after you have switched it on.
If the router or work tends to ride upwards and
requires extra pressure to feed, turn off the
power immediately.
Always grip the tool tightly, especially when
starting up the router
Always feed the hand-held router into the work in
the correct direction, against the bit rotation.
8
Make sure that the turn base is properly secured
so it will not move during operation
Make sure the shaft lock is released before the
switch is turned on
Miter Box Saw
Do not cut used lumber, inspect the lumber for
any nails, staples, and metal objects
Wait until the blade attains full speed before
cutting
Keep hands out of path of saw blade
9
Never use a file with a bare tang - the tang
could be forced back into your wrist or palm.
Inexpensive wooden handles are readily available
for common file sizes.
Lathe
Always double check to make sure your work is
securely clamped in the chuck or between centers
before starting the lathe. Start the lathe at low
speed and increase the speed gradually.
Avoid reaching over the spinning chuck. For
filing operations, hold the tang end of the file
in your left hand so that your hand and arm are
not above the spinning chuck.
Keep your fingers clear of the rotating work and
cutting tools.
Get in the habit of removing the chuck key
immediately after use.
10
Wood Burner
Check the knob for the temperature you want, set
at 6
Always start on lowest speed
Do not burn anything besides project
Any exposed teacher, tell the teacher
Do not touch tip
11
Drill Press
Clamp the work solidly. Do NOT hold work with
your hand.
Always remove the key from the chuck BEFORE
turning on the power.
Place a piece of wood under drills being removed
from the machine. Small drills can be damaged
when dropped and the larger tools can injure you
if dropped.
Let the drill spindle stop on its own after
turning off the power. Do NOT attempt to stop it
with your hand!
Avoid trying to clean the tapered opening in the
spindle while it is rotating.
12
Scroll Saw
Lower the hold down so that it presses lightly on
the material being cut
Do not attempt to saw stock that does not have a
flat surface, unless a suitable support is used
Check the proper blade size and type
Make release cuts before cutting long curves
Hold the material firmly and feed into blade
at a moderate speed
13
Belt Sander
Disconnect power supply before changing a sanding
belt, disk, making adjustments, or emptying dust
collector.
Use two hands to operate sanders - one on a
trigger switch and the other on a front handle
knob.
Inspect sanding belts or disks before using them.
Replace those that are worn or frayed.
Install sanding belts that are the same widths as
the pulley drum.
Adjust sanding belt tension to keep the belt
running true and at the same speed as pulley
drum.
14
Disc Sander
Always sand on downward side of disc when using
the disc finishing machine
Make sure the belt is not torn or loose
Never wear gloves or hold the work with a rag
when sanding
Make sure belt is tracking correctly and properly
installed on the belt finishing machine
Always use a backstop when using the belt
finishing machine in a horizontal position
