US Involvement
  • The Geneva accords
  • US stated in the accords for Vietnam to be one
    state, but the north wanted to have a communist
    govt. The UN got involved b/c they did not want
    Vietnam to be a communist state.
  • The Geneva Conference is a central cause and
    promotes the conflict.
  • The Gulf Tonkin incident increases the tension
    building to war.

  • Involvement began w/ financial aid and training

US on the Domino Theory
  • The US had an opinion that if Vietnam was put
    under the influence of USSR that neighboring
    countries to Vietnam would fall under their
    influence.

Australia and New Zealand Involvement
  • Under the ANZUS treaty both countries sent
    soldiers to aid the US.
  • Australia began by sending advisers to Vietnam
    until 1965, when combat troops were committed.
  • New Zealand began by sending a detachment of
    engineers and an artillery battery, and then
    started sending Special Forces and regular
    infantry.

Canada Involvement
  • Canadian govt gave diplomatic assistance to the
    US to establish contact with the Viet Cong.
  • Contributed supplies and weapons.
  • About 2,500-3,000 Canadian soldiers were in the
    US army b/c Canada did not send troops.
  • Canada gave political asylum to deserters of the
    US army.

Republic of Korea Involvement
  • Second-largest contingent of foreign troops in
    South Vietnam w/ about 320,000 soldiers.
  • South Korean troops developed a reputation for
    ruthlessness.
  • About 5,000 were killed in the war.

Philippines Involvement
  • 1,450 troops sent to South Vietnam under the
    Philippines Civil Affairs Assistance Group.
  • They were primarily engaged in medical and other
    civilian pacification projects.

Montagnards Involvement
  • Montagnards are highland people in Indochina
  • Montagnards did not agree w/ how they were being
    treated after the Geneva Conference.
  • Helped in jungle fighting.

North Vietnam Army(Viet Cong)
  • Many soldiers, like the US soldiers did not want
    to fight.
  • 2,000,000 North Vietnamese died.
  • Communist govt

  • Truce on January 27, 1973
  • The US had all American prisoners returned in
    return of being out of South Vietnam in 60 days.
  • Henry Kissinger negotiated with North Vietnam.
  • Vietnam was divided by the 38th parallel.
