Title: Weathering Notes

1
Weathering Notes
  • Label your notes Weathering
  • Write Mechanical and leave 5 lines
  • Write Chemical and leave 5 lines

2
Mechanical Weathering
  • Freezing and Thawing (ice wedging)
  • Release of Pressure (gravity)
  • Abrasion (particles)
  • Animal Action
  • Plant Growth

3
Freezing and Thawing
  • It rains and fills the cracks in the rock
  • The temperature drops to freezing
  • The water expands and breaks the rock

4
Release of Pressure
  • The weight (gravity) of the rock pulls the rock
    towards the ground

5
Abrasion
  • Water, wind, waves, or glaciers pick up rock
particles and move them against a rock causing a
    sanding affect.

6
Animal Action
  • When animals break down rocks

7
Plant Growth
  • Roots get into a crack and slowly grow, as the
root gets larger the rock breaks

8
Chemical Weathering
  • Water (H2O or Hydrolysis)
  • Oxygen (O2 or Oxidation)
  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
  • Living Organisms
  • Acid Rain

9
Water or Hydrolysis
  • Water dissolves rock by weakening the chemical
    bonds

10
Oxidation
  • Iron Oxygen rust
  • The chemical bonds are broken by means of the
    reaction between iron and oxygen.
  • Water helps speed the process up

11
Carbon Dioxide
  • Carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid
  • The acid dissolves rocks made of calcite, such as
    limestone or marble

12
Living Organisms
  • Organisms such as Lichen secrete an acid that
    breaks down the rock

13
Acid Rain
  • When fossil fuels are burned they release sulfur
    and nitrogen into the atmosphere
  • Sulfur and nitrogen combine with other elements
to form sulfuric and nitric acid
  • The acid dissolves rock made of calcite

14
Practice Time
  • Number a piece of paper from 1 31
  • Dont skip any lines
  • Record the type of weathering you see in the
