Title: MAGLEV Modal Analysis

1
MAGLEVModal Analysis
2
BogieThe bogie was modeled in MSC PATRAN using
bar and quad elements. The total number of
elements in the model is 12,306 and the total
number of nodes is 13,496. The weight of the
bogie with all the components like master drive,
CIDs, Batteries, etc is 12,228 lbs.
3
Modal Analysis The structure was supported on
springs to conduct the modal analysis. The
springs were placed at the midpoint of the
magnets. The stiffness of the vertical supporting
magnets is 4000 lbs/in and the lateral supporting
magnets is 1000 lbs/in. Figure shows the 8th mode
(freq 7.856 Hz) which is the bending mode.
4
Figure below shows the 9th mode of vibration
(freq 10.908)
5
The 10th mode of vibration (11.682 Hz) is shown
in following figure. Here we can see that the
magnets are oscillating due to weak supports
6
Bogie and the Chassis AssemblyThe bogie and the
chassis were modeled in MSC PATRAN independently.
The two structures were assembled later on. The
chassis was also modeled using bar and quad
elements. The total number of elements in the
assembled structure are 23,157 and the total
number of nodes are 24,897. The weight of the
whole structure is 21061 lbs. Similar to the
bogie, the assembled structure was mounted on
springs of stiffness 4000 lbs/In (vertical) and
1000 lbs/in (lateral)
7
Modal AnalysisThe bending mode was observed in
the 7th mode (freq 5.9198 Hz).
8
Rocking was observed on the 9th mode (freq
6.0045 Hz)
9
The 10th mode (freq 11.807 Hz) shows the
oscillation of the magnets
