  • 1.First Responder
  • Assess the scene for safety
  • Assess responsiveness of victim
  • CALL FOR HELP
  • Stay with the victim and keep calm
  • If trained in CPR, begin CPR
  • When AED arrives, turn it on and follow voice
    prompts

  • Activate EMS (call 911) or direct someone to do
    so
  • Ask someone to call a CPR/AED trained employee to
    the victim
  • Take the AED to the first responder and the
    victim
  • Help the first responder perform CPR begin the
    steps to defibrillate

  • Remove bystanders
  • Direct someone to notify family of the victim
  • Direct someone to notify School Nurse, Principal,
    Administration Office
  • Fourth Responder
  • Have a copy of the victims emergency card for
    EMS
  • Go outside to direct EMS to the exact location of
    the victim.

HOW TO USE THE AED
  • Open the top of the AED
  • Turn it on by pressing the green button
  • Follow the voice prompts
  • Place the AED pads on the bare chest of the
    victim according to the picture on the package.
    (one above the right breast and the other mid
    axilla below the left breast)

  • Next, listen to the AED voice prompt
  • If the AED tells you, Shock Advised, then have
    everyone stand clear of the victim.
  • When the AED voice tells you to Press Shock,
    then press the red button and the AED will
    deliver a shock to the victim.

Wait and Listen
  • The AED will analyze and then tell you to begin
    CPR if the shock did not work.
  • After 2 minutes of CPR, the AED will prepare to
    shock again.
  • If the victims heart beat has returned, then the
    AED will tell you to check for breathing.
  • If the victim is breathing, but unconscious, turn
    the victim to his side (recovery position) and
    wait for EMS and remain with the victim.
