- Women In Government represents the 1600 elected
women in state office - Women In Government began its relationship with
women state legislators in 1988 with a series of
legislative business roundtables, bringing
together women legislators with members of the
business community to establish a dialogue for
information exchange

- Women In Government believes state legislators
have a tremendous opportunity to eliminate
cervical cancer through legislation and programs
that bring awareness and access to the most
advanced and appropriate screening technologies.
5Challenge to Eliminate Cervical Cancer Campaign
Success
- Women In Government is pleased to report that
since the January 2004 launch of our Challenge to
Eliminate Cervical Cancer Campaign, 37 states
have introduced/filed legislation or resolutions
related to cervical cancer prevention and 17 of
these measures have been enacted.

7Campaign History in 2004
- The Challenge to Eliminate Cervical Cancer
Campaign commenced in January 2004, at the 10th
Annual State Directors Conference. - Throughout the 2004 legislative session, Women In
Government provided legislators with educational
materials as part of a legislative toolkit
developed specifically for the Campaign. - The legislative toolkit contains educational
materials on HPV and cervical cancer, medical
guidelines from ACOG and ACS, information on
Women In Governments Campaign, as well as model
legislation and resolutions. - Additionally, legislators had access to sample
media relations materials.
8A Call to ActionThe State of Cervical Cancer
Prevention in America
- On January 13, 2005 Women In Government held a
national press conference to release A Call to
Action The State of Cervical Cancer Prevention
in America. - There have been over 15 million media impressions
as a result of this press conference and local
media outreach. - Our objectives with this report
- to ensure that all women have access to cervical
cancer education - To ensure access to effective screening programs
that utilize the most advanced and appropriate
technologies available - and to provide a baseline assessment for state
legislators with which to evaluate current
practices in their states.
9A Call to Action ReportIndicators
- The report provides a baseline assessment of the
current status of cervical cancer prevention in
each state. - Assessment areas include
- incidence and mortality rates in U.S.
- access to health care and utilization in U.S.
- policy initiatives and infrastructure in states
10Report Grading
- Out of the 16 available points, the results
ranged from 4 to 12 points (25 to 75). This
range of results was then divided into four
value-ordered groups, with each group given a
grade based on percentage breakdowns
- Grades of 84 to 100 Excellent
- Grades of 67 to 83 Very Good
- Grades of 50 to 66 Good
- Grades below 50 Fair
11National State Results
- The nation as a whole received a grade of Good
for its efforts to prevent cervical cancer,
showcasing the need for raising the national
standard of care.
- 0 states received a grade of Excellent
- 4 states received a grade of Very Good
- 26 states received a grade of Good
- 21 states received a grade of Fair
12A Call to ActionSummary of Findings
- Incidence rates remain unnecessarily high in the
U.S. - Mortality rates remain unnecessarily high in the
U.S. - Millions of women remain unscreened or
under-screened.
13HPV Cervical CancerPolicy Resource Center
- In August 2004, Women In Government opened the
HPV Cervical Cancer Policy Resource Center. - The Resource Center is open on Monday, Wednesday
and Friday from 1200 to 500 pm EST. - The Resource Center is available to provide
information on HPV and Cervical Cancer Policy in
addition to providing educational resources and
materials.
