  • Breast Health and PARPS

2
News Flash!
  • PARP inhibitors are making headline news
  • June 2009 Exciting Cancer News
  • New Generation of Cancer Drug
  • New Hope for Cancer Treatment
  • PARP Inhibitors Shrink Certain Tumors

3
Breast Health Spectrum
  • Two Ends of the Breast Health Spectrum
  • From identifying those at greatest risk of
developing the disease to treating those with the
    most advanced disease
  • What are the medical breakthroughs?
  • What are PARPs?

4
Breast Cancer
  • Are you at risk or at an
    increased risk for breast cancer?
  • Age
  • Age at the start of menstruation
  • Age at first live birth
  • Number of first-degree relatives (mother,
    sisters, daughters) with breast cancer
  • Number of previous breast biopsies (whether
    positive or negative)
  • At least one breast biopsy with atypical
    hyperplasia

5
Breast Cancer

6
Genetic Testing
  • Should you consider genetic testing for breast
    cancer?
  • Not every woman is a candidate for genetic
    testing
  • The decision depends on the womans individual
medical history and her familys medical history
  • If you have genetic concerns, discuss options for
genetic testing with your healthcare provider

7
What are PARPs?
  • Poly (ADP-ribose) Polymerase ? PARPs are making
headline news, but what are they?
  • PARP Is a ubiquitous nuclear enzyme whose
function in the human body includes repairing
    damage to our DNA.
  • PARP regulates the nuclear machinery used for
repairing damaged DNA. If left unrepaired, DNA
damage can stall the cell cycle and lead to cell
    death.

8
What is a PARP Inhibitor?
  • PARP inhibitors prevent cancer
  • cells from repairing their own DNA.
  • If we can inhibit this enzyme that
  • repairs DNA and promotes healthy cell
  • growth, we can potentially stop or
  • interfere with the growth and production
  • of cancer cells in the body.

9
PARP Inhibitors
  • Who will benefit from PARP inhibitors?
  • Will all breast cancers be treated with this?
  • PARPs are Targeted Agents for use in advanced
breast cancer and in BRCA-associated cancer.
