Title: RFID Integration using NCIP

1
RFID Integration using NCIP
  • Presentation for the NCIP Implementers Group
  • Vincent Johnston

2
Basic Requirements
  • Conversion
  • initialization of the RFID label.
  • Integration with the LMS circulation application
  • Send Item Identifier/barcode
  • Update security function

3
Advanced Requirements
  • Initialization of RFID User cards
  • Seamless integration with the LMS circulation
    application.
  • Conversion
  • Stack processing

4
Advantages of NCIP
  • Use of industry standard and TCP/IP for
application integration is preferable compared to
    direct integration
  • LMS vendors can easily support multiple RFID
    vendors (bad feature!).
  • SIP2 has limitations, especially with the one-way
    communication structure.

5
Communications
  • The BiblioChip application will communicate
directly with the RFID Reader and the BiblioChip
    label.
  • It will also communicate with the LMS Circulation
    application using TCP/IP.
  • If a non-Windows Circulation application is used,
the BiblioChip application can reside on another
    computer.

6
Conversion
  • NCIP Lookup Item Service (5.3.3) to obtain the
    bibliographic information needed to initialize
    the item labels.
  • The user scans the items existing barcode. The
barcode is sent in the initiation message to the
    LMS.
  • The response message from the LMS contains the
bibliographic fields required by BiblioChip for
    label initialization.
  • Bibliotheca provides the conversion application.

7
Basic Circulation Integration
  • Send Item ID/Barcode
  • BiblioChip notifies the LMS application in the
same way as a barcode scanner simulated
keyboard entry to the active input field.
  • BiblioChip notifies the LMS application that the
reader has identified an item by using the Item
Received Service (5.5.10). The item ID is sent in
the initiation message to the LMS application.
The response message from the LMS application is
not required to provide information back
(Response contains no data if successful,
    otherwise an error message).

8
Update Security Function
  • As the LMS application checks each item ID in or
out, the Item Checked In Service (5.5.5) or Item
Checked Out Service (5.5.6) initiation message is
sent to BiblioChip. The checked out status of the
item ID specified in the message will be updated
    accordingly.
  • The response message returned will contain the
Item ID that was checked in or out, or it will
    indicate failure.
  • If failure is indicated, the user will need to be
prompted to place the item back on the reader.
  • If the status of the item is not changed, no
message is required to be sent.

9
Integrated Conversion
  • The user displays the bibliographic record, then
    chooses the initialize label function.
  • The LMS application notifies the BiblioChip
Application by using the Create Item Service
(5.4.6) initiation message. This message will
contain all the bibliographic information needed
to initialize the item label. The response
message returned will contain the Item ID, or
will indicate failure. If failure is indicated,
the user will need to be prompted to place the
item back on the reader and the initiation
    message should be sent again.

10
Verification of label
  • The data on the item label can be read using the
Lookup Item Service (5.3.3). This allows the LMS
application access to the data stored on the
BiblioChip. The Item ID must be specified in the
Initiation message from the LMS application.

11
RFID User Cards
  • The BiblioChip application notifies the LMS
application that the reader has identified a user
card by using the Item Received Service (5.5.10).
  • The Item ID will be blank and the User ID field
will be valid. The user ID is sent in the
initiation message to the LMS application.
  • The response message from the LMS application is
not required to provide information back.

12
User Card Initialization
  • The LMS application notifies BiblioChipXMLServer
by using the Create User Service (5.4.7)
    initiation message.
  • This message will contain all the user
information needed to initialize the user card.
  • The response message returned will contain the
User ID, or will indicate failure. If failure is
indicated, the user will need to be prompted to
place the card back on the reader and the
initiation message should be sent again.

13
Item and User Card Updates
  • The data on the item label can be modified using
the Update Item Service (5.4.18) The Item ID must
be specified in the Initiation message from the
    LMS application.
  • The data on the RFID user card can be modified
using the Update User Service (5.4.20) The User
ID must be specified in the Initiation message
    from the LMS application.
