• Believe that Fermilabs worlds best Antiproton
  Source is capable of making many physics
  measurements for many years
• There is the perception that Fermilab is not
  interested in future Antiproton Physics
• The Steering Group Report mentions in 5 different
  sections the reusing of the Antiproton Source
  rings while there exists a short paragraph on
  Antiproton Physics.
• Presentations of the Steering Group Report,
  SNuMI, Project X and proposed experiments state
  the reuse of the Antiproton Source rings.
• When presenting possible future Antiproton
  Physics experiments, first questions are about
  mu2e taking the rings and/or what about Project
  X.
• During this last week, P5 support of mu2e means
  Antiproton Physics is done.
• We would like Fermilab to change its support of
  future Antiproton Physics
• Remove association of Antiproton Working Group
  from Project X Physics and sponsor an Antiproton
  Physics workshop
• Consider a new facility designed for mu2e
  requirements and Project X
• Once perceptions have changed, will need support
  to help build a collaboration to design, propose,
  and build a target/detector for the Accumulator
  (below P5 threshold)
• Could start running and publishing in 2011
• Antimatter Gravity Experiment (AGE)
• Good fit with the priorities laid out in the P5
  report. 
• The report mentions gravity a dozen times and
  talks specifically about the potential breakdown
  of General Relativity.  Any deviation from the
  expected result would fundamentally change the
  way we understand the universe.  Deviations from
  General Relativity or the discovery of
  gravivector and graviscalar forces would have
  implications for cosmology, which puts the AGE in
  the otherwise empty region on P5's diagram
  between the Intensity Frontier and the Cosmic
  Frontier.  Fermilab has the intensity frontier in
  antiprotons, and the AGE would give Fermilab the
  intensity frontier for antihydrogen.
• For AGE to proceed in a timely way, it is
  important to conduct the deceleration studies as
  soon as possible.  This will set the transfer
  line energy.  The magnets for this transfer line
  could then be built before the next major
  shutdown.  A request for additional support from
  the lab will be coming soon in the form of an
  MOU.  We will need this additional support in
  order to complete the Antimatter Gravity
  Experiment in the most timely and cost-effective
  way.

  to people
