Out of Camp Trip Safety
  • Woo Hoo!

2
Overview
  • Here are some points of emphasis
  • All of these rules and regulations are closely
    regulated by the DOH.
  • They require very careful planning.
  • Im going to need everyones help in this regard.
  • Its not clear that weve adhered fully to these
    regulations in the past.
  • It may seem that were going a little overboard,
but safety is the ultimate goal here, and for it
    were willing to

OK, Now for the Good StuffRules
  • A Trip Leader and at least one counselor shall
accompany all out of camp trips.
  • The trip leader will review the safety plan and
general plan for that particular trip (with me,
well take a meeting) the day before departure.

5
A Trip Leader Must Be
  • At least 18 years old
  • In possession of current ARC Responding to
    Emergencies and CPR certifications
  • Or accompanied by someone with the same
  • A veteran of at least 3 out-of-camp trips as a
    staff member
  • Knowledgeable of plan for specific trip and
general procedures of camp trip safety
  • Which, of course, well go over together. When?
  • Right! The day before.

6
To Bring on All Trips
  • Flares and reflectors, first aid kits and fire
    extinguishers.
  • Dont worry, Ill take care of that stuff.
  • The first aid kit needs to go with the group on
any activity which involves swimming, hiking, or
    the outdoors in general.
  • i.e. not the movies.
  • A cell phone with the numbers of local sheriff
    and hospital.
  • Ill supply those at our meeting.

7
To Bring on Some Trips
  • Multi-day hiking trips that require bus
transportation to reach the hike destination must
    have a satellite phone.
  • Trips to destinations more that one hour away
from camp must bring copies of medical forms and
emergency authorizations sealed in an envelope to
    be opened only if needed.

8
Brrrr. Cold
  • Any potential hazerdous foods on trips must be
kept in a cooler or refrigerator bag unless they
will be cooked within two hours of leaving camp
    and eaten immediately thereafter.
  • Any foods not adhering to these guidelines will
    be trashed.
  • All food must be kosher.
  • Any required medications will be packaged in
    advance by the medical staff.
  • The meds will either be self administered, given
before or after trip, a nurse will accompany the
trip, a nurse at the host sight will administer
the meds or the child will not be allowed to
    attend.
  • Any meds requiring refrigeration will be kept in
    an insulated refrigerator bag.

9
And now for something completely different
  • Policy for Aquatic Activities Away From Camp
  • Prior to any waterfront activity away from camp,
a lifeguard will be selected to be the
    supervising lifeguard.
  • The supervising lifeguard will contact the
aquatics director or relevant authority at the
host site to determine appropriate role for SLC
    lifeguards at the site.
  • A ratio of 1 lifeguard to 25 kids will always be
    maintained.

10
More Water Rules
  • Before any aquatic activities occur, campers and
staff will be oriented as to any relevant safety
rules, and the supervising lifeguard will make
sure that conditions provide for complete safety.
  • The buddy system will always be employed. The use
of this system will be coordinated with the host
    sites lifeguard.
  • All campers and staff must wear life preservers
    in any boating activity.

11
One more thing about the water
  • All campers and staff will be assigned to swim
areas based on their abilities previously
    established during the swim test.
  • Records of the deep water tests must be brought
    on the trip.
  • Non-swimmers will not be permitted to be in water
that is more than chest deep.
  • If non-swimmers are permitted to swim in a pool
with a deep section, they must also wear colored
wrist bands to indicate that they are not deep
    water swimmers.
  • Also, on a hike, leaders are never to cross a
stream which is deeper than mid-calf of the
    smallest child.

12
And thats it!
  • Almost
  • Every trip leader will receive a packet from me
containing all pertinent info for their trip.
Included in the packet will be the Guidelines for
Visits to Public Places, and the Plan for
Transporting Campers. Theyll get this during our
    meeting.
  • Now were done. Thanks for your time.
