Hi, Im Jove. Today were going to be building a
Roman temple. I know a lot about this subject,
because many temples were dedicated to me. So
come along. Itll be fun, because Im coming.

• The most recognized characteristic of Roman
  architecture
• Takes its name from capital
• Three main parts base, shaft, capital
• Built in sections

Parts of a column

• Base- adds height and elegance
• Shaft- tapered to appear visually perfect from
  distance
• Fluting- decorative grooves to catch the light
• Capital- decorative top of the column

• Simplest of the columns
• Sturdy
• Represents strength

• Volute (see arrow)
• Volvo turn
• Imparts impression of slenderness and grace
• Fluting

• Acanthus leaves
• Portrays elegance and sophistication
• Most ornate of the columns

• Horizontal structure supported by columns
  consisting of three subparts
• Architrave/Epistyle
• Part right above columns
• Frieze
• Decorative continuous band
• Triglyph and Metope

• Triangle above entablature
• Cornice overhang
• Filled with sculpture
• Sculpture fitted to its location in the triangle
