Uses of Fingerprint Based Identification

• Fingerprint identification is now been
  increasingly used for a variety of purposes like
• identification of criminals
• immigration and naturalization purposes
• ATM machines
• Protection of Identity fraud

Background

• Fingerprint based Identification has routinely
  been used as an infallible means of personal
  Identification.
• Until recently, latent fingerprint
  identifications were deemed as valid evidence.
• But the 1999 case of USA v/s Byron Mitchell
  challenged the reliability of fingerprint
  evidence

Two Major Fingerprint Matching Techniques

• Minutiae-based
• The minutiae-based matching involves finding
  minutiae points on the fingerprints and then
  mapping their relative position.
• Correlation-based
• The correlation-based algorithm attempts to match
  two fingerprints based on the correlation factor
  of the two fingerprint images

Research Focus

• This research attempts to the model the
  probability of fingerprint identification test
  failure using a minutiae based pattern matching
  algorithm.
• The approach used to model the probability of
  test failure was a hybrid of the two techniques
• -determining the total number of possible
  fingerprint configurations
• -look at the overlapping regions between any two
  arbitrary fingerprints
