CONCEPT BOARDS curves
Using curves in a wellness center adds a feeling
of relaxation and detracts from the idea of a
medical center.

CONCEPT BOARD entry
Due to the success of the corner entry at the
Mettler Center and given our site, we hope that a
main entrance on the corner will bring people
into the space.

4
CONCEPT BOARD layering
Similar to the East Bank Club and the Sports Club
LA, our design of the wellness center will layer
spaces overlooking each other to be visually
stimulating.

5
CONCEPT BOARD light
All the examples we studied not only used natural
and indirect lighting to illuminate the spaces,
but also emitted light to the city, brightening
the surrounding area. Therefore in our design we
want to use natural light and glazing to get the
same effect.

CONCEPT BOARD statement
After doing an analysis of the downtown Champaign
site, and visiting/researching several
wellness/fitness centers, we were able to
identify key elements that made these successful.
From this, our design for the downtown Champaign
wellness center will focus on CURVES, ENTRY,
LAYERING, and LIGHT. Besides these four main
concepts, we also want to integrate the
separation of spaces by use and noise level. The
examples we studied used this idea as well.

SCHEME A and B site plan
SITE 100 x 380 lot at the corner of Neil St.
and Church St.
8
SCHEME A and B diagram
NOISE LEVEL Both schemes used the idea of a
noise gradient throughout each level. As one
enters the building and works their way up to the
top level, the noise and environment is more
peaceful.
9
SCHEME A floor plan- level 1
SPACES OBSERVED entry, reception, café/juice
bar, lounge, retail, mechanical room 1,
classrooms, restrooms, storage
10
SCHEME A floor plan- level 2
SPACES OBSERVED restaurant, women and mens
locker rooms, aerobics area, stretching area,
weights, cardio, open space to below
11
SCHEME A floor plan- level 3
SPACES OBSERVED offices, restrooms, storage,
nurse practitioners, conference room,

14
SCHEME A longitudinal section
MAIN IDEAS SHOWN IN SECTION dramatic path of
circulation of first floor to second, seating
area on first floor with water feature,
relationship between the restaurant and workout
area, ceiling height of third level (more
intimate), pool depth, skylights over fifth floor
15
SCHEME A lateral section b-b
MAIN IDEAS SHOWN IN SECTION how elevator opens
(different side depending on floor), relationship
between the restaurant and workout area, ceiling
height of third level (more intimate), shape of
skylights
16
SCHEME A lateral section c-c
MAIN IDEAS SHOWN IN SECTION curve of a retail
store, separation of functions in workout area,
childrens play area considered a high activity
area (pushed to the front of building), skylight
and pool relationship (proportions)
17
SCHEME A south elevation
KEY ELEMENTS SHOWN IN ELEVATION first floor
outdoor seating area for cafe/juice bar, entry to
garage, decent size windows for offices on third
floor
18
SCHEME A corner elevation
KEY ELEMENTS SHOWN IN ELEVATION major degree of
transparency over entrance, massive piece
anchored by two solids
19
SCHEME A east elevation
KEY ELEMENTS SHOWN IN ELEVATION glazing for
first and second floors, more private windows on
setback level (where pediatrics treatment would
be located), larger windows at childrens play
area, winter and healing gardens vegetation,
skylights over fifth floor
20
SCHEME A north elevation
KEY ELEMENTS SHOWN IN ELEVATION continued
glazing from east elevation, winter garden,
healing garden, fire stairs as an anchoring
element (rhythmic pattern of stairs is visually
interesting)
21
SCHEME A perspective
KEY ELEMENTS SHOWN IN PERSPECTIVE Main corner
entry and glazing

26
SCHEME B longitudinal section
MAIN IDEAS SHOWN IN SECTION All activity spaces
pushed to the east side of the building for
natural light and also for pedestrian (from the
street) intrigue
27
SCHEME B lateral section
MAIN IDEAS SHOWN IN SECTION Vertical
circulation, layering of spaces with atrium,
relationship between cardio area and restaurant
28
SCHEME B south elevation
KEY ELEMENTS SHOWN IN ELEVATION Café/juice bar
outdoor seating area, massing of the corner
entry, covering of the corner entry over the
first level, big windows on second and third
floors
29
SCHEME B east elevation
KEY ELEMENTS SHOWN IN ELEVATION Massing of the
corner entry, highly glazed façade, vegetation on
setback in the garden
30
SCHEME B north elevation
KEY ELEMENTS SHOWN IN ELEVATION Materials used
respecting the surrounding building, corner entry
projection
