Title: The Offices of Christ
1The Offices of Christ
- How is Christ prophet, priest, and King?
2Jabatan Kristus
- Calvin membedakan 3 jabatan dalam Institutio.
- Pentingnya perbedaan ini karena sebenarnya
manusia diciptakan untuk ketiga jabatan dan
pekerjaan ini. - Sebagai nabi, Kristus mewakili Allah di hadapan
manusia. Sebagai imam Ia mewakili manusia di
hadapan Allah. Sebagai raja Ia memerintah dan
memperbarui pemerintahan manusia.
3Jabatan nabi
4Jabatan nabi
- Tugas nabi adalah mengungkapkan kehendak Allah
kepada orang-orang dalam bentuk perintah,
peringatan dan berkat, janji-janji pengharapan,
atau teguran yang keras. - Bukti Alkitab tentang jabatan kenabian Kristus
Mat 2111, 46 Luk 716 2419 Yoh 32 419
614 740 917, Kis 322-24
5Jabatan nabi
- Why did NT epistles avoid calling Jesus a
prophet? - Although Jesus is the prophet whom Moses
predicted, yet he is also far greater than any of
the OT prophets, in two ways - He is the one about whom the prophecies in the OT
were made. (Deut 1815-18 Luk 2427
6Jabatan nabi
- he is also far greater than any of the OT
prophets, in two ways - Jesus was not merely a messenger of revelation of
God (like all the other prophets), but was
himself the source of revelation from God. - OT Prophet Thus says the Lord
- Jesus But I say unto you
7Jabatan imam
- Kata PL kohen artinya orang yang memegang
jabatan yang mulia dan penuh tanggung jawab,
mempunyai otoritas atas orang lain, petugas dalam
peribadahan. - Kata PB hierus artinya ia yang perkasa, seorang
yang sakral, seorang yang mempersembahkan diri
kepada Tuhan.
8Perbedaan nabi dan imam
- Nabi dipilih untuk menjadi wakil Tuhan bagi
umatNya, untuk menjadi utusanNya, dan untuk
menafsirkan kehendakNya. Nabi adalah guru agama. - Imam adalah wakil manusia di hadapan Allah. Imam
mempunyai hak khusus untuk datang menjumpai Allah
dan berbicara serta bertindak atas nama umatnya.
Imam juga adalah guru.
9Perbedaan nabi dan imam
- Beda ajarannya
- Nabi menekankan tugas-tugas moral dan spiritual,
tanggung jawab dan hak-hak khusus - Imam menekankan aturan-aturan ritual pada waktu
umat menatangi Tuhan

11Jabatan imam
- Jesus functions as priest in two ways
- Jesus offered a perfect sacrifice for sin. The
sacrifice which Jesus offered for sins was not
the blood of animals but himself. He was both the
sacrifice and the priest who offered the
sacrifice. - Jesus continually bring us near to God. When
Jesus offered a perfect sacrifice for sins the
curtain of the temple that closed off the holy of
holies was torn in two.
12Jesus as Perfect High Priest
- In order to be the perfect High Priest, Jesus
must be God as well as man. - God to know all things and bring man into the
presence of the Father. - Man He has the right to represent us before God
and can express his petitions from the viewpoint
of a sympathetic high priest, who understands by
experience what we go through.
13Jabatan raja
- In OT the king has authority to rule over the
nation of Israel - In NT Jesus was born to be King of Jews (Mat 22)
but he refused any attempt by people to try to
make him an earthly king with earthly military
and political power (John 615)
14Jabatan raja
- Nonetheless, Jesus did have a kingdom whose
arrival he announced in his preaching (Matt 417,
23 1228, etc). - He is in fact the true king of the new people of
God. Thus, Jesus refused to rebuke his disciples
who cried out at his triumphal entry into
Jerusalem.

16Historic Premillennialism
17Postmillennialism
18Jabatan raja
- After his resurrection, Jesus was given by God
the Father far greater authority over the church
and over the universe. (Eph 120-22 Mat 2818 1
Cor 1525)
19Our Roles as Prophets, Priests, and Kings
- In the Garden of Eden, Adam was a
- Prophet he had true knowledge of God and always
spoke truthfully about God and about his creation - Priest he was able freely and openly to offer
prayer and praise to God. No need of sacrifice to
pay for sins, but another sense of sacrifice Adam
and Eves work would have been offered to God in
gratitude and thanksgiving, and so would have
been a sacrifice of another sort (cf. Heb.
1315) - King having been dominion and rule over creation
20Our Roles as Prophets, Priests, and Kings
- After sin
- Not functioned as prophets for they believed
false information about God and spoke falsely
about him to others. - No longer had priestly access to God because sin
cut them off from His presence. - Instead of ruling over creation as kings, they
were subject to the harshness of creation and
tyrannized by flood, drought, and unproductive
land, as well as by tyrannical human rulers
21Our Roles as Prophets, Priests, and Kings
- There was a partial recovery of these 3 roles in
the kingdom of Israel but there were also - false prophets
- dishonest priests,
- ungodly kings.
22Our Roles as Prophets, Priests, and Kings
- When Christ came, we saw the first fulfillment of
these 3 roles - He was the perfect prophet, who most fully
declared Gods word to us - The perfect high priest, who offered the supreme
sacrifice for sins and who brought his people
near to God - The true and rightful king of the universe, who
will reign forever with a scepter of
righteousness over the new heavens and new earth.
23Our Roles as Prophets
- We have a prophetic role as we proclaim the
gospel to the world and thereby bring Gods
saving Word to people. - Whenever we speak truthfully about God to others
we are fulfilling a prophetic function
(prophetic in a very broad sense)
24Our Roles as Priest
- We are also priest, because Peter call us a
royal priesthood (1 Pet 29). - Hebrew also tell us that our good works are
sacrifices pleasing to God Do not neglect to do
good and to share what you have, for such
sacrifices are pleasing to God (Heb 1316). - Paul also has a priestly role in mind for us when
he writes, I appeal to you therefore, brethren,
by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as
a living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God,
which is your spiritual worship (Rom 121)
25Our Roles as King
- We also share in part now in the kingly reign of
Christ, since we have been raised to sit with him
in the heavenly places (Eph 26), thus sharing to
some degree in his authority over evil spiritual
forces that may be arrayed against us (Eph
610-18 James 47 1 Pet 59 1 John 44) - God has even now committed to us authority over
various area in this world or in the church,
giving to some authority over much and to some
authority over little. But when the Lord returns
those who have been faithful over little will be
given authority over much (Matt 2514-30)
26Our Roles as Prophets, Priests, and Kings
- When Christ returns
- We will once again be true prophets because our
knowledge will then be perfect and we shall know
as we are known (1 Cor 1312). - Then we will speak only truth about God and about
his world, an in us the original prophetic
purpose which God had for Adam will be fulfilled.
27Our Roles as Prophets, Priests, and Kings
- When Christ returns
- We will be priest forever, for we will eternally
worship and offer prayer to God as we behold his
face and dwell in his presence (Rev. 223-4). - We will continually offer ourselves and all that
we do or have as sacrifices to our most worthy
king.
28Our Roles as Prophets, Priests, and Kings
- When Christ returns
- Yet we shall also, in subjection to God, share in
ruling over the universe, for with Him we shall
reign forever and ever (Rev 225). - Jesus says, He who conquers, I will grant him to
sit with me on my throne, as I myself conquered
and sat down with my Father on his throne (Rev
321). In fact, Paul tells the Corinthians, Do
you not know that the saints will judge the
world? Do you not know that we are to judge
angels? (1 Cor 62-3).
29Our Roles as Prophets, Priests, and Kings
- When Christ returns
- Therefore for all eternity, we shall forever
function as subordinate prophets, priest, and
kings, yet always subject to the Lord Jesus, the
supreme prophet, priest, and king.
