Problem Based Learning Assessment
  • Kimberly Turk
  • Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute

2
What is Problem Based Learning?
  • The last new thing you learned was probably
  • something you chose to learn
  • driven by your interest or need
  • Learned through a variety of resources
  • discussed with someone
  • integrated with something you already knew
  • PBL uses real world problems as the beginning
point for learning new material. This
methodology allows students to gain new knowledge
    while reinforcing existing knowledge.
  • Participants add new knowledge to existing
    knowledge.
  • Not only are students learning content but they
are also problem solving and participating in the
    decision making process.

3
Assessing Individual Contributions
  • Reviewing the research
  • Student Learning Log
  • Student Notes
  • Reviewing the thought process
  • Assignments
  • Writing
  • Projects
  • Presentations
  • Tests
  • All types of test questions
  • Writing test questions

4
Assessing Contributions to the Group
  • Individual Student Assessment in Group
  • Describing the criteria
  • Establishing a grade
  • Self Evaluation
  • Peer Evaluation
  • Instructor Evaluation
  • Wandering the room
  • Sitting to listen but not engage
  • Aligning Assessment Tools with PBL

5
Assessing the Problems
  • Did students identify the learning objectives you
    intended?
  • Dont lead them. If they dont go there it is
your responsibility to add a page or put that
objective in another problem while remembering to
rewrite this problem for the future.
  • Did students identify additional learning
    objectives?
  • Did students reach the appropriate depth in their
    research?
  • Let students share details between groups.
  • Question them about what they have learned as it
relates to the problem. Dont just start
quizzing without the topic being related to the
    problem.

6
What if?
  • What if the group didnt go far enough in depth
    with the research?
  • Can they be given more time and assistance
    locating resources?
  • Is there another group in the room that can guest
    lecture to this group?
  • Are all/most of the groups struggling with a
topic? If that is the case this is a teachable
moment and they will want to hear from you as an
    expert.
