    questions What makes us human?
  • The series, hosted by Alan Alda, contains three
    programs
  • Program One What Made HomoSapiens
  • Program Two Chimps Arent Us
  • Program Three Alans Spark
  • The series will explore the captivating and often
    controversial questions of the human spark
    not only the scientific aspects but also how art,
    dance, religion, symbolism, and culture are
    integral to our humanity.

  • The unique outreach initiative accompanying the
    series is composed of two phases, each focused on
    partnerships between public television stations
    and science museums
  • Phase I Partnerships
  • TPT/Science Museum of Minnesota
  • UNC-TV/North Carolina Museum of Natural History
  • KAET/Arizona Science Center
  • WFWA/Science Central
  • The outreach activities and events will target
    underserved audiences of both public television
    and science museums
  • The activities and events of Phase I will inform
    the structure of Phase II

  • Phase II of the outreach initiative will launch
    in Winter/Spring 2009
  • 5 station/science museum partnerships will be
    awarded 10,000 grants
  • Outreach events and activities, based on the
    ideas and materials developed in Phase I, will
    promote engagement with the broadcast series

  • NATURE, currently in its 26th season, has won 10
    Emmy awards, two Peabody awards, and the first
    ever Sierra Club honor for a program
  • NATURE Online includes a robust Web site with
    many interactive features and a wealth of
    ever-expanding materials and resources for
    educators

  • The Outreach initiative is currently in its 2nd
    year
  • The goal of the initiative is to increase
    membership and series ratings through community
    engagement
  • 15 individual stations from all over the country
    have participated in the first two years of
    outreach
  • Past outreach activities have included
  • Photo Trivia Contests
  • Museum and Zoo Days
  • Screenings Receptions
  • And many more dynamic and creative activities
    with local partners

CPB Opportunity Fund
  • Year Three of the outreach initiative will launch
    with the 27th season of NATURE
  • 10 stations will be awarded grants of 10,000
  • Grant sites will be encouraged to partner with
    related local organizations and seek local
    underwriters
  • Outreach activities and events should be designed
    to boost series ratings and station membership
  • New and creative print/online materials and
    resources will be developed to support the
    initiative

  • LOOKING FOR LINCOLN is the official film of the
    Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, and the program
    will be broadcast in February 2009 in honor of
    the bicentennial
  • The two-hour program will feature Henry Louis
    Gates, Jr. and Doris Kearns Goodwin, and is a
    co-production of Kunhardt Productions,
    Thirteen/WNET, and Inkwell Films

  • LOOKING FOR LINCOLN explores how the American
    perception of Lincoln has been shaped between his
    assassination and the present day

  • The one hour documentary program will be
    broadcast in prime time in late September or
    early October 2008
  • WHERE WE STAND is designed to inspire the
    American public and heighten awareness of crucial
    issues facing the countrys educational system by
    highlighting key obstacles opportunities facing
    American schools
  • In addition to the on-air broadcast, the program
    will be posted on an accompanying Web site in 5
    story segments, each addressing a different
    critical need or question

WHERE WE STAND
AMERICAS SCHOOLS IN THE 21ST CENTURY

  • The program , cued for broadcast just before the
    November 2008 General Election, will be timely
    and relevant for parents, teachers, and schools
  • Stations can easily incorporate the program into
    larger outreach initiatives, for example
  • Highlight in the Program Guide
  • Host a screening
  • Leverage current relationships with local schools
    and school districts to incorporate the program
    into existing events

GREENQUEST

  • GREENQUEST is a multimedia environmental
    education experience and contest
  • The active online community will launch in Summer
    2008
  • The competition will launch in Fall 2008
  • Teams will be able to enter the contest through
    the Web site
  • The competition will become a primetime reality
    show, air date anticipated Spring 2009

  • The entire GREENQUEST experience will provide a
    tremendous opportunity for stations to bring
    green issues to local schools and the community
  • Stations can encourage kids to take action, and
    can even create their own teams to enter the
    contest
