Title: Trash Bag Challenge

1
Trash Bag Challenge!
  • Grade 8
  • OLPH School
  • Science
  • January 2009

2
Purpose
  • The purpose of this project is to find out which
trash bag can hold more weight for a longer time,
    Glad or Hefty?
  • The problem of this project is that we dont have
a clue on which bag could hold more, so we
    researched each bag.
  • Both Andrew and Jack had the hypothesis that
Hefty would be able to hold more weight than Glad.

3
Controls/Variables
  • Controls
  • We started with 15 pounds and went up 5 pounds
every 15 seconds for both bags.
  • Did two tries for each bag.
  • Variables
  • We used two different trash bags, Glad and Hefty.
  • The weight increased 5 pounds for every 15
    seconds.

4
Research Abstract
  • Hefty
  • Hefty trash bags are very good for food storage.
  • They are 1.01 mm thick in material.
  • Uses a technology called Puncture Protection to
    prevent ripping or tearing.
  • They have an unscented odor block to keep the bad
    odor in the bag.
  • Glad
  • Glad trash bags are made of polythene and are
    100 recyclable.
  • They are .95 mm thick
  • They dont contain plasticizers.
  • They use a technology called SELFing or
    Structurally Elastic Like Film.

5
Materials List
  • The materials we used for this project were
  • Glad trash bags,
  • Hefty trash bags,
  • Weights,
  • Stopwatch, and
  • A pen and paper (to record the data.)

6
Steps for project
  • We put 15 pounds in a trash bag (Glad or Hefty)
  • Lifted up bag and every 15 seconds add 5 pounds
    until bag rips.
  • Repeat process for each trash bag.

Results
  • As a result of the project, Glad was a better
trash bag because it held more weight for a
longer time for both of the bags we tried.
  • Hefty was a big disappointment to both of us.
  • If I were you I would listen to the quote from
the Glad commercial, Dont get mad, get Glad.

9
Conclusion
  • So in conclusion, both of our hypotheses were
wrong. Glad was a better trash bag because it
could hold more weight for a longer time.
  • Even though Glad is a little more money, I would
suggest to your parents to buy them to save some
    cleaning up.

10
Synthesis
  • You should buy Glad instead of Hefty.
  • Glad will keep you out of those Trash disasters
where it would take hours to clean up.
  • So once again, tell your parents to buy Glad!
