2
Introduction
  • What is it
  • Where it started
  • Who uses it
  • Issues
  • Costs
  • The future of the Technology

3
RFID
  • Technology for automated identification of
    objects
  • A RFID device is a small microchip designed for
    wireless data transmission.
  • A RFID system is comprised of readers and
    servers.
  • Uses high frequency 13.56MHz to ultrahigh
    frequency( 916 Mhz )
  • Passive RFID no power source
  • Active RFID chips longer range , more space

4
Brief History
  • Introduced in a business plan in 1969 for use in
    transportation, banking, security and medical
    domains.
  • First demonstrated in 1971 by the NY Port
    Authority for Toll Passes
  • Initial RFID passive technologies first used in
    1973

5
Rubee
  • Operates at a low frequency of 113 kHz
  • Ultra low power consumption lithium battery
    lasts up to 10 years
  • Overcomes limitations of RFID, Rubee tags much
more easy to read and operate under harsh
    conditions.
  • Not an alternative to RFID
  • Range of 10 to 50 feet
  • Disadvantges low bandwidth , less tags can be
    read at one time.

6
Our Focus
  • Rubee new, limited scope
  • Is Rubee the next generation of RFID?
  • RFID Widely used, better examples( Walmart )

7
Wal-Mart
  • In June 2003, Wal-Mart, the worlds largest
retailer, instructed its top 100 suppliers to
place RFID tags on all its pallets and cases by
January 2005, and later announced it would be
applied to an additional 200 suppliers by January
    2006.

8
Along the Supply Chain
9
Supply Chain Management
  • Tagging
  • Managing the flow of
  • products
  • Scanning
  • Tracking - Delivery of the right product, at the
right time , in the right amount, to the right
    place.

10
Who else uses it ???
  • Esso
  • Tim Hortons
  • Ford
  • Citibank
  • US Government
  • Macpass
  • Fed Ex

11
Business Applications
  • Personal Identification ( Passport, Access Pass )
  • Business Intelligence
  • Automotive (Ignition, Anti-theft )
  • Payments( Quick pay )
  • Implants ( Tracking Animal Herds, Humans )
  • Supply Chain Management ( Inventory tracking )

12
Benefits
  • Consumer Convenience
  • Security
  • Improved Service
  • Efficiency
  • Cost
  • Logistic
  • Management
  • Peace of mind

13
The Market
  • RFID
  • around 4b , projected to reach 12.3 b by 2010
  • RUBEE
  • Still in introductory stages

14
Costs
  • Initial fixed cost 5 cents per tag
  • (single item, case, pallet )

One source says that initial costs reach up to 9
million dollars , depending on how many products
are to be tagged
15
Issues
  • IS to handle the Data SCM
  • Training
  • Security/Privacy

16
What the future holds
  • The Combination of these technologies
  • From business to consumer focus
  • Rubee the new RFID?
