ZIE UK - Water Interest Group
  • Priorities
  • Short Term
  • To contribute to the immediate recovery of
Zimbabwe from its current acute water (water and
    sanitation) crisis through, networking,
    consultancy services, training, skills and
    expertise, research, advocacy and lobbying.
  • Medium term
  • Whilst focusing on the short term priorities, the
WIG recognises the need to reform the current
    complex institutional arrangements within the
water and sanitation sector. Therefore WIGs
position is to play an active role in developing
    sustainable policies/frameworks aimed at
facilitating access to water and sanitation to

ZIE UK- Water Interest Group
  • What has been done so far
  • WIGs has identified the following keys issues
    that need immediate attention
  • Water Treatment Chemical supplies are being
erratic, resulting in none treatment of water.
This is resulting in poor water quality being
delivered to customers. Public health is being
    severely compromised
  • Sewerage disposal and treatment sewer systems
are severly blocked, sewage pump stations needs
rehabilitations and sewers have collapsed sewers
    in sevral locations
  • Untreated sewage is being discharged into rivers
and water courses causes severe polluting to
    impounding reservoirs
  • Capacity issues within the existing assets
    According to the Zimbabwe Infrastructure
Assessment Note (ZIAN, June 2006) 40 shortfalls
in water treatment capacity are common in more
    than 50 of urban centres
  • Unplanned outages of critical facilities due to
intermittent power availability, lack of standby
pumping facilities, lack of spare parts etc
  • Security of supply - Existing system is unable to
cope with planned and unplanned events without
    loss of supply to customers
  • Low pressure issues - common occurrences in
    Mabvuku, Tafara etc
  • Sewer Flooding common occurrences in major
    cities, Chitungwiza, Harrae etc
  • Over 40 of all the water produced is lost
    through Leakage
  • Supply and Demand Balance mismatches
  • Water Charges
  • Raw water supply - About 50 of all urban centres
are in dire need of new raw water sources. Dam
storages are threatened with heavy siltation due
to poor land practices. Also shortages of
transport, fuel and finance have resulted in
routine dam inspections being suspended putting
the stability of these structures into jeopardy
    (ZIAN, June 2006).
  • Lack of skilled personnel
