Search for neutron ? antineutron transitions at
DUSEL
N-Nbar proto-collaboration
Goal is to build at DUSEL a vertical 1-km long
experiment with zero background that would be
factor of 1000 more sensitive than previous
expt. at ILL/Grenoble
3Recommendations of Homestake PAC in 2006 (LOI
7)
- NNbar can be in the first suit of DUSEL
experiments to be initialized ? 2011 - There are no previous NNbar-like experience and
tradition in US - It needs feasibility demonstrations and several
developments in the Early - Implementation Program to prepare a mature
proposal - We think these developments will be continued
S4 MREFC process
4Following PAC recommendations we formed a NNbar
RD Collaboration to pursue studies towards the
full proposal and technical design CSUDH,
Indiana U., NCSU, ORNL, U. Tennessee and CNA
Engineering number of consulting experts
- The team has experience and expertise in
- large projects construction (L3 Hadron
Calorimeter, KamLAND) - participation in large underground experiments
(UT, CSUDH) - large scale underground construction (CNA
Engineering MINOS,S1) - reactor licensing, commissioning, operations
(NCSU and ORNL) - cold neutron sources and cold neutron
experiments (IU, NCSU, UT) - neutron technologies like supermirrors and mag.
shield (IU, UT) - neutron transport simulations (NCSU, ORNL, UT)
- intranuclear NNbar transition search (CSUDH)
- particle detector design, construction,
simulations, cost estimate, etc.
5Collaboration plan includes (a) addressing
feasibility issues (show stopper and cost) in
2-years RD studies. RD proposal will be
submitted to NSF and DOE by Dec 3.
- Feasibility studies will include critical items
where demonstrations are required - construction issues of the km-long large
diameter vacuum tube with focusing reflector and
magnetic shielding inside vertical shaft - reactor issues configuration, performance,
licensing, ownership, safety, security, possible
backgrounds for DUSEL etc. - technological issues large-area supermirror
focusing reflector construction, large-volume
Earth magnetic field shielding down to nT-level - preliminary pre-conceptual system design, cost
estimate, and schedule - measurement of straightness of candidate shaft
and 3D mag. field components along the shaft
length, survey of existing vertical shafts at
Homestake. - EO for NNbar and reactor at DUSEL.
(b) after the feasibility demonstration continue
work towards full proposal and technical design
within MREFC development of the DUSEL scientific
program

12- All technologies used by proposed NNbar
experiment exist. Challenge is - in the engineering implementation in the
large-size system - Engineering support from DUSEL is not yet
available - (like e.g. for FNAL-based experiments from
FNAL) - We are trying to team with the major National
Lab (LBL) for engineering - Will need help from DUSEL and SDSTA in
- survey of vertical shafts
- understanding of availability constraints
- measurements of shaft parameters
- understanding of infrastructure
connections - definition of access
- tuning of development plans
- connection to SD administration and
community for reactor issues - our outreach efforts in SD
